in one of my economics class that subject came up
war having brought us out of the great depression
it did but the reason it did was because industry was not centralized
so everyone got a piece of the manufacturing pie
these days it doesnt work that way
all the money gets grafted on the way to the contract
the contract costs tons more than its actually worth to pay for all the graft and the few corporations who get contracts concentrate the profits to only a few top dogs
take Haliburton for example
among other no bid contracts they were awarded they got the food contract
apparently the contract guaranties profit as a percentage of expenditures so naturally they spend as much as they can while at the same time being required to only have so much waste per meal
the guys end up eating lobster and roast beef with caviar and seared Ahi
makes for a great meal but were does the money go
it used to go to all the folks who provided food for the military or to small factories to make rations out of it and there were hundreds of em that helped out
the money was spread out throughout the economy
not these days
now it all goes into Dick Cheney's pocket ( what a $%&*#@ rat ******* that guy is eh )
fuel is another one
haliburton again got a no bid contract to provide fuel to the military in Iraq it was another open ended contract
so our favorite ex vice presidents company charged the US gov roughly twice what the gov could have bought it for themselves
I think it came out to about ten billion in overcharges just on fuel alone and that only in a period of one year ( I think its been a while since I heard the lecture )

point is
war used to spread money out and get people working
at least if your not the ones getting bombed and slaughtered
round here it definitely did stimulate the economy for the next say fifty years by the end of WW2 but things are completely different now and these days it only serves to bleed the economy and concentrate wealth in the hands of the corporate execs
remember
Rorge the idiot signed every single spending that came across his desk in the entirety of his first term
that was a first
while at the same time ignoring all the warnings about the housing market and
my personal fave
all the warnings about the Freddy and Fanny scam to loan money to those who basically could not afford to pay it back
war once upon a time was profitable and did serve to stimulate the wining sides economy
( as long as its not you or yours on the short end of the deal )
but not any more
Dick and Reorge made sure of that
