In 1955 when I saw the godzilla film, I thought it was ridiculous and badly made. I didn't believe it but I believed and was terrified by a different horror film, "The Killer Shrews"

I'm sure you will be relieved to know that shrews have been tamed ;)

A New Population of Blue Whales Was Discovered Hiding in the Indian Ocean
    • The covert cadre of whales were identified by their slow, bellowing ballad that’s distinct from any other whale song
    • Only a dozen other blue whale songs that have been documented, each the calling card of a unique population
    • Most researchers think that the song help males woo their mates
    • Alex Carbaugh-Rutland said the results “were very sound, no pun intended”
The discovery was published in the journal Endangered Species Research.

Sorry for the premature reassurance. Not all the shrews have been tamed. :(

Southern right whales could face new threat from ocean heating, study warns
    • Southern right whales were nearly hunted to extinction in the early 20th century
    • After hunting ban in 1930's their numbers have slowly recovered
    • Recent declines in food availability could be linked to rising ocean temperatures and changes to sea ice levels
    • Since the 1990s southern right whales have begun hunting for food further north, which appears to be linked to declines in reproductive success
The research was published in the journal Global Change Biology

What happened to the Left Whales?
Oh, that's right. They ran out of other whales' fish.

    It isn't the wrong whale.
It was the right whale to pursue for profit. More blubber for lamp oil and heaviest and slowest so easier to kill and harvest. Those ladies wanted not to pay too much for their corsets, after all.

Global warming is faster than evolution — and this could spell trouble for marine life
    • A new study performed the largest artificial evolution experiment on warming tolerance
    • Zebrafish show the ability to evolve to tolerate higher temperatures
    • Unfortunately, the rate of ocean warming is faster than their rate of evolution
    • For other slow-breeding animals, global warming may be much faster than their capacity to adapt
    • Another study showed that the rate of warming in the oceans has increased by 450% in the last three decades compared to the preceding three decades

Blue whales have 'rediscovered' South Georgia
    • South Georgia was the epicentre of commercial whaling in the early 20th Century, exploiting fur and elephant seals as well
    • At the peak of the carnage they were killing 3,000 blues per year
    • Fur and elephant seals managed to bounce back to historic levels relatively quickly, but whales, and the blues in particular, did not
    • There is abundant krill in the area, but apparently that knowledge could not be passed on to future generations
    • Since 2011 41 blues have been spotted off South Georgia
    • But last February a remarkable 58 blues whales were identified in the area

We drove through south Georgia yesterday but did not see a single whale.
