Diesel outboard development

I don't know if this is new here, but I see that the UK MOD are funding the development of diesel outboard motors. The motivation seems to be avoiding volatile fuel in a combat situation and the logistical advantage of having the same fuel for outboards as for other engines.

Very nice to be at the receiving end of UK MOD funding.
But all previous attempts to market diesel outboards have failed because of noise, weight and price...

Evinrude already produces multi fuel engines.

I looked briefly for an internal drawing-could not find one.

Anyways I see no reason for a scotch yoke-makes no sense IMO. And with opposed pistons you need 2 cranks anyways,or one crank and control rods for the opposite piston.

If anything they should emulate the old Commer TS3 engines-single crank and rocker arms.
IIRC over 100lbft and 40 hp per litre,for truck use-not souped up boat engines.
I have an OP engine,and it's not a Commer...

A diesel outboard would be great and maybe a good seller-however getting it into the markets would be so pricey.

EcoMotors is also developing an opposed piston engine which has two pistons per cylinder and cylinders on either side of the crank. I don't see anything indicating spark ingnition or Diesel. Cutaway view is available at http://www.ecomotors.com/technology

It's diesel.

I know this from before,and if you look at the pistons you can see a molded cutout so the fuel can be squirted right to the center of the pistons at TDC.
