As for the question of syphillus, There is evidence that it was present in both hemispheres before Europeans (Columbus and his ilk) came to the Americas. My theory is when ancient voyagers or trekkers, if you accept the land bridge theory, simply brought it with them. Obviously people have been having sex since the birth of man, and sex transmits STDs. However people came to the Americas, they simply brought it with them.
