Route du Rhum

Banque Pop IX / Armel Le Cleac'h is now qualify (1200 NM to do single-handed with the boat after refit), with winds up to 30 Knots, all seems ok and speed is there (photo) :

It is said that "The next step in the program is to move to focus on performance in the days ahead. Armel will face tomorrow his direct opponents in Port-la-Forêt for a first 24-hour training". It is new, Port La Forêt is where is based Macif, it seems Ultims eventually deal this common training to improve their performance, good spirit .....

News from Macif, inc. mention of the common training with Sodebo, Gitana17 and Banque Pop 9 : "We were in training with the Pole Finistère Offshore Racing (based in Port La Forêt) these last three days. We were able to confront for the first time Sodebo, Banque Populaire and Gitana, our future competitors on the Route du Rhum. This is a good omen for the future. " They also remove the aerodynamic tarpaulins put this winter, which revealed not satisfactory, dangerous and leading to lost of stability of the boat.

Thanks, Dolfiman! So far as I can tell no one has said who was faster-the one picture of Gitana sailing with a boat I didn't recognize showed the other boat in front and to windward. May mean nothing. They may have an agreement that no one would make any claims about the results of the three boat testing?

If you had one of the ship tracking apps on your smartphone,you could have kept up with their progress.Late yesterday they were south of Fouesnant travelling quite quickly.All doing 20+ knots and at least one doing more than 30.When I saw Idec Sport berthing at La Trinite on Wednesday,there were about a hundred spectators on the pier to see the boat return.
 
I only looked from time to time and haven't cross checked.If you go to marinetraffic.com and zoom in over north-west France,you will be able to do a search for individual boats and if you use the "show track" option,the track shows and at several stages you can highlight the position and view the speed at that point.

NOTE-the use of the term "foiling trimarans" for boats that don't fly is an example of terrible writing, in my opinion. The Multi 50's just adopted the same basic foil system pioneered by the 60' tris many years ago. Those boats were great examples of "foil assist" as are the 50's. dl

The Multi50 class: The little racing cars of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe
There may not be many of them but the quality is certainly not lacking in the Multi50 class that will start the 2018 Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe solo transatlantic race from Saint Malo on November 4th.

Sailing their 15-metre foiling trimarans, the six competitors in this class all have their own points to prove as they make their way across the Atlantic on the 3,542-nautical mile course to the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.

In this division proven older boats will take on newer designs that represent the latest thinking in the class. For each of the sailor-boat combinations, whatever happens, it will be a full-on and highly competitive Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe because the Multi50s are wet and fickle racing machines that can achieve average distances of over 500 miles in 24 hours.

The Multi50 class brings together trimarans of up to 15 metres in length and 15 metres width, that are subject to a class rule that leaves some freedom to attract different designers. In its desire to embrace the latest technological developments, the class has now separated from its "vintage" era and in 2017 authorised the addition of foils for the first time.

Five of the six multihulls in the running - all except that of Gilles Lamiré - are therefore equipped with foils this time. Three of them added one-design foiling kits to old hulls, while the two newest trimarans, Ciela Village and Solidaires en Peloton Arsep, were designed from scratch around the new "flying" game.

The foils have boosted the speed of the boats by about 20% on a reach, with regular accelerations to over 35 knots. Thibaut Vauchel-Camus even surpassed the 40-knot mark during a delivery this year.

A clarification about the foils for this Route du Rhum : any servomechanism are forbidden for the foils, should be adjusted manually by the means of hydraulic cylinders. Some who used such servomechanism during their training / learning curve with the boat should remove them for the race . As a remind, servomechanism is only authorised for the steering function (= autopilot).

Thanks Dolfiman for the heads up on this! More from Voile magazine---this is a big deal. In my opinion, foil control should be allowed in the same way an autopilot is allowed for steering-it is- above all- a safety issue with these gigantic foilers! I hope no one gets hurt due to this shortsighted rule!

"Everyone can run the rum in Ultimate, including Edmond de Rothschild and its foils enslaved by an electromechanical system ..." This little phrase from our last issue, in newsstands for a few days, caused a stir at Gitana. Because it touches on a very sensitive subject, and also because it includes, let's face it, an error, or at least an unfortunate shortcut.
This problematic point is the idea that "everyone", that is to say, any multihull over 60 feet, can run the Route du Rhum in Ultimate category. In fact, there is an amendment to the rules of racing (endorsement No. 2, adopted last March 15) which prohibits any electromechanical servo system foils. The 23 pages of the notice of race downloadable on the site of the Route du Rhum mentioning neither this endorsement nor this prohibition, we thought in good faith that Edmond de Rothschildcould use the servo system developed by the team Gitana. Sébastien Josse will not use his foil servo system
As a result, Sébastien Josse will not use his foil servo system. Like all his competitors, he will use hydraulic cylinders to adjust his foils: impossible to do without. But these cylinders will be operated manually, not automated. Let's be clear: it never occurred to us that a sailor like Sebastien Josse was considering cheating to win the Rum! The famous servo system comes down to an electronic box and a hydraulic pump that can land, in the same way that landed the computer of an autopilot and its cylinder. This case and its pump, Sébastien Josse will leave them on the ground for the Route du Rhum; our apologies to the Gitana team if we were unclear on this point. (bold-dl)

The third dimension autopilot: the flight
The comparison with an autopilot is also often used by the Gitana team to make understand the interest of the servo system foils. The autopilot of the third dimension, that of the flight. For the performance, but also for the safety of the runner, especially solo. This is even more true when we consider a race around the world like the Brest Oceans, whose departure is scheduled for December 2019 ... And it is precisely the stake of the debate that rages between the old and the modern, between the "Against" and "for".

The Ultimate Class 32/23 remains closed to the electromechanical control of the foils. To say that Macif or Sodebo, who puts his new trimaran in the water in December, do not work on the subject ... In fact, we can assume that the tenors of the Ultimate Class 32/23 will allow the electromechanical servo foils when they have developed satisfactory and safe systems. Will this evolution take place before the famous solo world tour? The story will tell. But if this is not the case, and if Gitana decides to participate anyway, Edmond de Rothschild will have to navigate in "manual" as for Rum.
