re-instating inboard using a bike engine

hi, i`ve recently bought a 16` boat hull..... i was told by the previouse owner that it was an offshore powerboat but it doesnt look all that power-boat-like....it used to have an inboard, but was converted to outboard when the engine blew up.
my question is: what do i need to do to an engine to marinise it? i`m thinking of putting it back to inboard, using a motorbike engine (around 160 bhp).
how would i go about linking a prop to the engine?

It is a freshwater offshore boat. Keep land in site at all times and you should be O K. Enjoy the ride.

Unfortunsatly most bike engines are not built for much in the way of cont power (most dont ride uphill at 140mph for hours on end.

Even if you could cool it the longevity would be low , and the gearing difficult to pull off.Find out what WAS in it first and go from there.

thanks fred. i wouldnt really use it for any length of time, but , as you say, gearing would b a nightmare... if i could, though, would the bike engine have enough torque to power the propeller? i`ve seen different propellers, but don`t know what sort do which job, i.e, what designs are good for speed, etc?

I read in another thread that Jet-Ski motors and drive units can be obtained from wrecked jet-skis. That might do the job, I'm not sure if they're based on bike engines.

yep, thanx, i`ve sorta looked into that.... the jet-ski engines i found were 55 hp, and i would like a crazy engine....... to do crazy things! thanks for the tip about drive units though!

Your boat looks like a normal size and shape and probably weight also. Compare your boat to others in your area. See what types of engines give the speeds you need.

very true....... the `powerboat ` 1 is so light i can easily pik up the back end and lift it right up. for the moment, i might leave it as in outboard and do the conversion in the winter, but i`m after info so that i know what i`m up against.... thanx for the help guys
