Notes on Skene's Elements of Yacht Design

I have Marchaj's Sailing Theory And Practice on order - do you think the basics are covered equally well in that text?

Yes.

But remember, what you are trying to do, is learn a 3-4 year degree of naval architecture in 3-4days of reading. You have an admirable goal, but a significantly long road ahead of you if you wish to be as competent as any qualified naval architect. Not saying you can't do it..but, your progress will be measured in years, not days.

Great words of wisdom & encouragement - thanks, Ad Hoc :)

So far, reading Skene's book has led me to the difficulty of figuring WSA, and that means either understanding Taylor's Mean Secant Method better directly, or learning about it more indirectly. This is an amazing book for its time, and I am so glad that there is a version of it available to read online or to download. I think I will do some more self study about figuring WSA before coming back to make notes on the remaining chapters. I really appreciate everyone's help on this thread :D!

Thanks. I did see this thread before. I think I am more interested in understanding not only which methods work, but how and why. For this I probably need more mathematical maturity. I will come back later.

I think we believe in immaterial rights - such as copyright

Well, he's not the first one asking for free copies of copyrighted material and there are some other nationalities among them too.. Just wondering if they have ever heard the term before?

The PDF of the 1904 edition of Skene's Elements of Yacht Design is in the link in the first post of this thread. "View the book" on the left side of the archive.org Cornell University Library page. It's also available at http://books.google.com/books?id=LCxFAAAAYAAJ

Unless you are going to design several hundred boats and ships, all you need to understand is simple math.

WSA is just the wet area, there are some neat things you can do to drop the wetted area, introducing air is the coolest of those.

And that should take you back to the KISS principle.
