Let me quote here from abstract of a technical report (the English was a bit off, so I modified it a bit):

"When a long rope, of which the one end is fixed upstream, is adrift freely in the flow, and the other end is rounded several turns to the hoist of paddle wheel axis of a boat, then the boat can go upstream by virtue of water power. The boat is called a the paddle wheel climber."

I think I understand. See if this is close: the upstream end being held firm and the downstream end is loose. In between is a boat of some kind equipped with a paddlewheel, around which in some way the rope is looped several times so that there is effective friction. The power applied to the wheel causes it to rotate. Because the relative torque from the floats vs the spindle the boat can be pulled upstream towards the fixed end. I would guess that the loose end had some sort of attachable drag inducing device if much work was to be done.

It sounds like a capstan or winch set on its side and is an interesting concept.

Note that some final polishing work remains (replacing existing figures with clearer ones, fine tuning the layout (fonts, margins, etc.), proofing, fact verification and so on), but the chapter is generally complete.

Hello. I know this is a rather old topic and much has happened in the last ten years, but I would be very interested in finding out the current state of the translation of Kotaro Horiuchi first book on boat design, Locus volume 1? I'd be very interested in getting a copy. I have Vol 2 and it has made me a Horiuchi 'Fan'.
Even a link to the original Japanese version would be most welcome. Thank you!

Vol 2 is listed on Amazon right now (July 10, 2025). It is a really inspirational and useful book.

If that means a rare bird, that is yes. Apparently available in Japanese, which I don't read, but I think the pictures would be worth the book. The English translation seems to have not been completed. If I find a source for the Japanese version, I will let you know.
