I was hoping someone could help me. I am redoing a 16ft 1968 Wellcraft. It came with a 40hp Johnson outboard. The lower unit on the outboard is seized so I am using a 1978 35hp Evenrude I have on hand. The steering on the boat was an old exposed drum cable steering with bare wire and pulleys running down both sides of the boat. The steering wheel and drum are in bad shape. I would like replace the whole thing. The only place I could find a replacement is www.glen-l.com. They have an open drum system, but I'm not sure if I should just replace everything with a Teleflex system or even which Teleflex system to use. This is my first project boat so any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would replace with the Teleflex system. Provided your 'Rude has a steering tube built in, this will be an easy swap. If it doesn't, transom mounted tubes can be had. Cable/ pulley systems are problematic at best, and sloppy too.

Teleflex NFB

I did the same job and used a Teleflex No Feed Back helm to replace the cable over pulley system because I couldn't find replacement parts for the drum. The engine wasn't set up for it but Teleflex sells a stainless clamp gizmo which I bolted to the transom. The clamp holds the outer part of the push-pull cable and you connect the inner part to the engine.
