Hello & Westlawn vs YDS

That is a good question. I sent an email a couple of weeks ago to see if I could continue the Rhino class I had paid for in advance. Work changed and I got too busy to deal with it until recently. I have not heard from them at all.

I tried calling them this morning about 0735 but got a msg that the phone number has temporarily been disconnected.

There was a msg on the website saying they were busy doing a boat delivery a couple of weeks ago, so I was not concerned about no hearing from them vial email.....but now I am. I am hoping they are just having phone problems. This could be affecting the emails too.

Incidently, the web site is up and running.

Well after months of working out what course is right for me, i choose YDS,

Was very excited to finally sign up, that was a few weeks ago, and have hurd nothing at all.

My credit card has not been billed, so i guess thats a positive lol

At this point you might want to contact your credit card company and make sure a charge is not placed....at least until this is resolved. It does not speak well that a school or company has its phone disconnected nor reply to emails. I continue to hope it is just a temporary thing that has nothing to do with YDS other than a phone system out of order.

Maybe they are just overdue returning to business?

To the best of my knowlwedge, Tom and Nan went to Rockport on 9/5 to sail a boat they have purchased, a little 22' Westerly twin keel, back to Eastport. Their web site said they planned to be gone about 6 days, but as of last Thursday they were only as far as Northeast Harbor(about 1/3 the way). I guess poor wind and lots of fog had slowed them down. Since then we have had a number of great sailing days, good wind and no fog, so they ought to be back pretty soon, but who knows. Why their phone is disconected is beyond me. If I hear anything else I'll post it.

That is great news. I must admit I was getting a bit worried about them and even called the local C of C to see if there was some sort of disaster, not knowing who else to call. This is a small town there and I figured if anything bad had occured, the Chamber would know of it. It was at that point I figured they were just overdue for some reason. On the bright side, things cannot be too bad for them if they are sailing, even slowly. The phone might just be a downed wire or a voice mail box too full.:?:

Would Westlawn or Mc Naughton's consider adding Ship and Submarine design as part of their course thus increasing possible employment opportunities for their students. I also know that it will increase in the fees which is to be expected with the added work which can lead to degree quilification.

I think that ship design is very well covered on several universities.
In Norway you can study design of ships, fishing boats and floating structures (oil plattforms and fishfarms for example) but not small boats, recreational crafts and sailboats. Well you can study practically what you want in the last part of a master degree, but you will be on your own

In practical terms it simply wouldn't be possible for the Westlawn (or YDS) programs to cover ship or sub design. Quite apart from the specific engineering that is required, the course itself would need to be way too long - like several YEARS longer.
As Raggi said - there are any number of universities etc that cover the design of ships. Westlawn caters to a niche in the market

Will, just 2 years longer is needed to become degree quilified. The reason that I post that question is that I saw in magazines and on the web about super yachts over 200' 0" long including extra large Motor Yachts that are being designed that are between 69 to 160 metres long and they are NOT passanger ships but motor yachts for the rich and famous.

Even I saw a sail training vessel that the German Navy is using called the Gorch Fock which is an 89.4 mt LOA, 12 Mt Bmax, 5.4 mt Draft and 1,900 tons displacement. (first pic)

Is anyone home at YDS?

I've noticed that there is no activity at all on the YDS discussion group. Emails to them do not get answered either. Does anyone know what is going on there? Are they shut down?
