An interesting alternative to half entrance angle for seakeeping analysis is the "vertical prismatic coefficient" - particularly the CVP for the forward part of the sectional area curve. An article we wrote some years ago tells the story:

Before computer modeling and design work, everything was done on the drawing board, by hand, which was often tedious and time consuming, when hull form changes were involved. Lackenby published a couple of methods and practical techniques, to change a hull form though longitudinal translated hull sections with hand calculations.
