Hello,

I am studying[1] and the terminology is above my pay scale. Specifically, I am concentrating on chapter 19. I provide a few examples that I can't find on the internet.

Topsides-Frame-Flange Width

Deck-Beam-Web Height

Deck-Beam-Flange Width

Also, what does web and flange mean in boat construction terminology. I feel like it is a stupid question but I need to understand the terminology.

Welcome to the forum.
If you don't have access to something like the AISC Steel Construction Manual or the ABS Rules, here is a site that explains web and flange for a simple I-beam.

I-beam - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-beam

When we look at vessel structure, often the web of a beam (frame, longitudinal, stringer, etc) is attached to the shell, bulkhead, or deck. In these cases there is a particular (varies with the rules) width of the shell, bulkhead, or deck that becomes the effective flange. From there typical structural analysis applies.

I found this excellent reference from 1918.

Modern Shipbuilding Terms. (1918). United States: Lippincott.

Just to make sure here...., because you used metal shipbuilding terminology,....what exactly are you building in? Steel? Al? Wood? Composite?

1. Width of the flange of the topsideframe
2. Height of the web of the deckbeam
3. Width of the flange of the deckbeam

Did you read the previous chapters 13 - 18, or maybe the whole book? Could be helpful even if there is no specific explanation of what a web and a flange is, since the book is written for designers and builders who usually know what is stiffening in boat construction.
