hello I have a 20' 1966 bertram moppie..that for some god unknown reason it came with the very short lived option of an OMC drive and a 300 buick..I am trying to get more info about converting it over to a mercruiser..I have an orginal type late model 165 inline 6 and mercruiser drive I would like to install on the boat..sooo with that said I would like some input on filling the hole and what to use to do so..also I am not sure exactly how to get everything lined up..ie the new transom cutout to the motor also any ideas on where I can get a cheap template..any ideas or help with this project is appreciated any ideas how much it would cost to have someone else do it also? thanks for you help!!

Too bad it didnt have a Volvo, you would have to cut the hole bigger to put the mercruiser in, but if I was you, take the boat to a local Mercury/Mercrusier dealership, let them do the template. Mercrusier dealerships have a template that has all the holes to where the drill bit is guided in almost perftectly 90* to the transom. Also, to get the correct angle on your engine, let the dealership do that. You dont want to fool around, unless you dont want your engine and drive to last.
That kind of repowering's not exactly easy.... especially since the transom will probably need to be strengthened around the old cutout to fit the new shape. I'd agree with River Rat that the drive should be professionally mounted.

Transom angles are a standard 14 degrees nominal. The thickness is 1 5/8 to 2" and the tansom assemblies and input shafts are designed to work within those limits. The patch should be straighforward. Cosmetically it depends on your expectations. Two layers of 3/4" plywood for the core and laminate inside and out to the original schedule. You can also butt block the seams. have you checked the motor mounts and cleareance for the replacement engine?

Transom Adapter Plates
I am thinking about this same conversion, I have a 24ft Century with an OMC and Ford 351w, would like to use the engine and convert the drive to a Merc. Has anyone heard of the transom plate adapter that http://www.outdrives.com/plates.html is offering? Also, any additional advise would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking at repowering from an OMC to Mercruiser as well. What did you end up doing. The plates are not sold anymore. According to the manufacturer, people were not taking into consideration many factors needed. It was to much trouble for them so the discontinued? Any luck on the transom repair. Any problems I might avoid? Tips?
