Japanese Quake and tsunami

Especially when it comes to tsunamis!

-Tom

P.S. I love water but only when it's wear it's supposed to be...

Good news--no need for street lights any more , most of Japan glo's in the dark.

Not good Japan this is bigger than just you, if you poison the water and atmosphere thats not not cricket ole boy.

Time for some truth so we --the rest of the world can protect our selves from your imompetence in handling this matter. This is not only you any more.

Embarrassment!! humiliation--yeah get over it. if the reactors are stuffed start mixing cement NOW please. Arso

And... we don't like bad stuff in our environment but it will heal eventually. Compare the effects of massive fireball, concussion and radioactivity - Hiroshima, 65 years after the bomb:

...to the deleterious long-term effects of what you are trying to do to the Western World through liberal policies today. A little cleansing and humility might be a good thing in the long run - Detroit, with 65 years of programs trying to take care of those who would not work with money of those who do:

I'd take the radiation, thank you.
That's one of the more irrational posts I've seen anywhere on the internet lately, Mark. And of course, I say that with the utmost love and respect....:)

Detroit's problems have persisted in spite of attempted cures, not because of them. It would make as much sense to blame a cancer death on the doctors who were treating the patient -- as though they had caused the cancer, instead of simply being unable to stop it.

If Japan can't get it right then there go my hopes of that green power being safely developed in the near future. Likely, this is a huge setback in nuclear development. Keep shovelling that coal in...

-Tom

Yes, because electric cars really run on coal.

hmmmmm
thats funny, I thought they ran on electricity

And where does the electricity come from boys...?

-Tom

Well, around here it comes from natural gas, and hydroelectric plants (water power). The Navajo had the only coal-fired plant in this corner of the country, and I think they shut it down because it wasn't worth meeting environmental standards.

It comes from huge efficient generators far more efficient in cost and emissions than the 150 year old internal combustion engine that seems to be the only way of turning a shaft.

It cost 20 cents to charge the batts --good for another 250km

Troy's got the winning answer in my book cause of all the power sources available today that are cost effective Natural Gas is the way to go. I'm pretty sure it even has the least emissions of all the combustibles as well

Nuke was never a particularly cost effective way to generate elec. Although its hard to lay to much blame in Japan at the moment it does serve as a grim reminder of how tenuous our efforts towards safety are in the hands of the natural world. We need sources that can fail completely and not present long term issues.

My condolences to those in Japan
its a long row to have to hoe
specially if your stuck wearing a moon suet

But I wouldn't give up on nuclear energy just yet. I have a feeling that in the long (long) run, it's still the way to go. The costs of making it safer can be amortized over the years, or even generations.

Well it does seem that the next generation of nuke farms will be designed up a bit better. You have to admit that we are all on a steep learning curve.

Any bets on Iran blowing themselves up, if they ever get it going. Infact asking Iran not to have the purifiers and not allowing them information and denying them assistance might just be the recipe for right ole DIY job and a middle east blow out.

If Iran can get 30,000 RPM centrifuges to work I don't think they will have any problem with reactors. Fundamentally a reactor is just a big boiler, not much different from what goes on in an oil refinery. They have some really bright people and most of the information on reactor design and operations is open source these days.

The only part that countries are really reluctant to share is weapons design, but even then the basics are publicly known and they can either figure it out for themselves or else they can import the knowledge. The US, Russia, France, India, Israel, India, Pakistan, and China all figured it out for themselves*, no reason the Iranians can't do it too.

*The reason the UK is not on the list is that they were present for the development in the US and so have done relatively little homegrown weapons design.

Wow,-- thats impressive , to be so well informed on Uk's military secrets.

I have a few friends in the military and wont even talk to me about anything remotely having anything to do with weapons and military hard wear.

Are fish populations affected by the tsunami?
