The concept for the Concorde was developed during the 1950's when the price of oil was belw $3/barrel. The US had a project for a SST that was going to be bigger and faster, naturally ...

Japan was on a nationalist campaign of expansion at the time the west decided to cut back or eliminate its access to oil and scrap metals, there timing ( Pearl Harbor ) was in some ways based on the limitations placed against her but the inevitability of war was not.

Who said that Japan would not be like a Chernobyl, who ever it was was exactly and precisely wrong. I havnt looked back but some one said it.

A few years ago the end of the world on Dec 12 2012 seemed laughable but now--today--there seems to be enough reason for it to be possible.

Say Saudi in a democracy revolution and Isreal getting involved.

China wants to know and know now,-- now!! WTF is going on at that Fukoshima plant after todays another 7.

Frosty: I recall noting earlier that the Japanese nuclear authorities were either being less than honest or perhaps a little naive. The fact that they have apparently given up lying about it is a bit scary IMHO; now what are they trying to hide?

Aside from the appalling local impact of a really massive release of nuclear material, there is the impact on the World’s economy to consider. Already there has been an impact in my own town where the Honda factory has severely reduced output. Obviously there’s a domino effect down the automotive food-chain and far beyond that. Japan has more than its fair share of nut cases, is this going to set them off again - remember the gas attacks on the subway? As the old Chinese curse puts it, we are living in interesting times.

In the meantime the politicians in Washington are playing pinball with our destinies . . .

If the seven day half life radiation had been vented in the first place, we may not be in this situation.

Fukushima is falling apart: are you ready?

Thirteen months have passed since the Fukushima reactors exploded, and a U.S. Senator finally got off his *** and went to Japan to see what is going on over there.

    What he saw was horrific.

And now he is saying that we are in big trouble.

See the letter he sent to U.S. Ambassador to Japan Ichiro Fujisaki, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and NRC’s Chairman Gregory Jaczko here.

But what is so ironic about this is that we have been in this heap of trouble since March of 2011. March 17th, to be exact, when the plume of radioactive materials began bombarding the west coast of California.

And Oregon. And Washington. And British Columbia. And later Maine, Europe, and everywhere in between.

Independent researchers, nuke experts, and scientists, from oceanography to entomology and everywhere in between, having been trying to sound the alarm ever since.

The scientists most upset are those who have studied the effects of radiation on health. I’ll say it again, so its really clear: we are in big trouble.

    Bamby,

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!

    Rather alarmest, perhaps even sensationalist?

Your source is a politician and in my experience, they are ALL liars.

    Nonsense.

Gooday 'Sub-Tom' Sure hope you're proved right or 'rite' or correct - - in the long term - fullness of time. BUT I don't like your chances.

The facts - that we can see - rising to the top in the worlds media - is not looking all that promising.

No disagreement with your - 'alarmest' - 'sensationalist' nor 'politician'
however that is not the point. The truth will out-in-the-end. It will. There'll be many many more deaths yet. Wish it wasn't so. Hope you're right not me.

The pointed-end of the problem is the 'nuclear site waste area - break down' - the lack of ability & commitment to stop the contamination & the speed at which it travels around the globe.

I do wish they would treat - all our lives - as important - just for a bloody change.

    Ciao, james
