    Jean-Jacques Savin’s ocean canoe

Yes this was the same sailor, but different vessel. He died doing what he loved. Bless his soul.

    Jean-Jacques Savin’s ocean canoe

Excellent points. Hopefully the rescue dive team was able to determine what the cause was. Not much room for error especially while traveling solo. I’ve read many stories about crew rotating to take on emergency tasks around the clock. Going solo requires total faith in your vessel.

    Jean-Jacques Savin’s ocean canoe

Just learned Jean-Jacques Savin set sail again across the Atlantic. This time it was in an ocean canoe. He ran into bad weather near the Azores, deployed EPIRBS and was later found dead by maritime rescuers. They found his vessel capsized. Looking over various stories it appears the bad weather...

MV Conception - dive boat fire. Suggestions for improved diving boat standards

Forging vessel records is another topic all together. Let justice take its course there as well. Vessel owners & captains must be held responsible and/or shut down if they are committing fraud. This case is a great example. The captain was charged and will be sent to jail. People died due to...

MV Conception - dive boat fire. Suggestions for improved diving boat standards

Agree on the night watch + log book. They are used routinely aboard ships. This is a case of negligence. Let justice take its course. Inspection of both maintenance AND fire watch log books by USCG should be a result. In my opinion at least 2 people should be on fire watch. People doze off all...

Problem with Documented vessel and Campbell Yachts

Oh my. What a fiasco. May the force be with you on this endeavor! Question: Have you explored this can be registered another way? e.g. 1. Contact nautical architect and surveyor to examine the vessel and all related data you have gathered thus far. 2. Nautical architect writes up a design...

    Random Picture Thread

Oh my those wooden stumps tell the whole story. That first one gobbled up a 3 blades! That's a collector's item piece of driftwood to be sure.

Coronavirus lessons: Antiviral/antibacterial surfaces being explored?

This is true, but most come by plane, train or automobile to get to the port...spreading illness along the way. Ideally, a pre-travel health check by a certified professional would ideal. It only takes a single person to wreck the vacation of a lifetime for many passengers. We had a trip planned...

Coronavirus lessons: Antiviral/antibacterial surfaces being explored?

I agree the big ships just have too many people on them. It appears there are smart watches that now track body temperature. Perhaps cruise ships should require pre-screening by a doctor (no fever or other symptoms). Any physician qualified to perform a physical could do it. Makes a lot of sense...

Coronavirus lessons: Antiviral/antibacterial surfaces being explored?

Too late for that ship docked in Oakland. That NIH study is quite interesting though. “...solid-state Cu2O disrupts host cell recognition by denaturing protein structures on viral surfaces, leading to the inactivation of viruses regardless of the presence of a viral envelope.” Ships should...

Coronavirus lessons: Antiviral/antibacterial surfaces being explored?

Good inputs! I know copper has been used in a lot of ways to kill many types of biological organisms. It’s simple and non-toxic compared to other solutions. A copper ion based paint or coating would certainly be a good place to start. Ref: Comparison of the antiviral effect of solid-state...

Coronavirus lessons: Antiviral/antibacterial surfaces being explored?

With the high number of cruise ship passengers impacted by this virus, I am curious if this industry has explored antiviral and antibacterial surface technologies. Is there a specification for this yet? All too often these days people are trapped on these vessels and taking on various illnesses...

    Design database

For improved boat design using Rhino you might consider Orca3D, which is an add-on product. It has quite a few nice features. Orca3D Naval Architecture Software | Marine Design Plug-in for Rhino https://orca3d.com/ However, I do not see many PLM integrations listed for Rhino or its Orca3D...

    Design database

That is correct. If you are seriously aiming to compete in many areas these days a PLM system is a requirement.

    Design database

He asked for a "design database". Not knowing his resources it does no harm to mention a PLM. That's what they are. They are not just data management. They manage the whole development process. You can modify part parameters in a PLM, which then updates the geometry on the CAD side. Thus, you...

    Design database

Hello Ad Hoc, you are correct he has no initial parameters. Those will need to be defined while designing each vessel. If you read my full post you'll notice that both 3D CAD + PLM are mentioned. The 3D CAD can define early prototype boats/ships and further refine them while working within...

    Design database

You are correct TANSL. I would start with a small set of project vessels that I found interesting (e.g. canoe, fishing boat, patrol boat, cargo vessel). Each would have its base set of standard design parameters. From here you can make new versions of these vessels. If I were to design larger...

    Design database

If you are into 3D CAD, most of the better solid modeling software offers features to: Define a set of boats, hulls or ships using requirements and design parameters that you define and follow industry best practices. During the design process you can adjust the beam, length, number of...

Dolfino - 7m classic keelboat for daysailing

Looks like nothing but fun Dolphiman! Awesome classic lines on that hull. Looks like it will slice through waves very nicely. Bravo to you and Alain Lebeau on a job well done. :)

Kiteboat Looking to Set New Sailboat Speed Record

Ok reading up further on the new concept it appears they hope to set a new record by the year 2022. Wishing them all the best. Hopefully they settle down onto a design that flies with good stability and has and can safely land in the water. Once that happens, we might be seeing production boats...
