Sven-Olof Ridder is the creator of the winged keel.

Sven Olof Ridder is the creator of the winged keel.

Over the years 19868-69 Sven-Olof Ridder and Lars Bergström conducted extensive experiments with keels at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Among these also different variants of winged keels were tested. These were shown to have great advantages over all other variants. Results from these experiments were showed open during the following years. During his travels in the United States Lars Bergström showed images from these experiments. Among those who had access to these ideas was also Ben Lexcen (Miller, at that time).

Sven Olof Ridder is also the creator of the Windex wind indicator.

No wonder I find boat design so difficult: my family must be the only one that hasn't had something to do with the development of the winged keel.

Chinese junks were using a wing keel or horizontal plate over 1000 years ago. They got upwind performance with less draft.
