Bit of deja vu (failed in French - didn't even have it as a subject), I am sure this is a repeat of something before (am I in a time warp?)...

Sailors got lovesick & the figure head was often female (or effeminate?), rolled often, uncomfortable to sleep in/on (the very early versions?), went where the wind blew - (was easier to guide downwind), needed ballast down below to counter the topside lift, needed careful handling, TRADITION (I can't think of more?

I took a tour of a Santa Maria replica this summer. The crew said the passengers and crew used to go bathroom over the edge of the bow. I asked why not at the stern, a little more private, hey? He said just in case you fell overboard, doing so at the bow gives you a chance to rescue the person by throwing a line. Otherwise they would just keep on sailing and would not turn around to save the person. Tough life, they slept on deck, the animals were kept below in stalls.

I guess a boat can be called a SHE, since it gets most of the attention, is responsible for all the major expenses and get nursed and cared for...

    Why do women have legs?

So they won't leave a snail trail.
