    Fishermen, all from a small town. On the plates is one line per person (not one plate per person). A fisherman's wife looks over her shoulder to the sea from where her husband -and in many cases also her son(s)- never will return.....

    Good luck,

    Angel

    Guillermo, the grassy hill is the dike going north.

    Richard, do you know the steam engines at the end of that dike....?

    I just looked up the history of the memorial. Question: What are the abbreviations on the names-Dsn., Esn., Hsn., Jsn., Ksn. and so on?

    zn. = zoon (son). Tzn. = son of T. - 11 J. = 11 Jaar (Years) old.

    1883 was a bad year....

    Thanks. It was a sad story about brave men feeding their loved ones. I had a suspicion that was the meaning but did not have adequate education to be sure. It is good to know these things.

    You can see a drop in the dead rate when the engines came that could bring them into safety.

    There is a saying in Holland; ‘‘De vis wordt duur betaald.’’ that is ‘‘The fish is heavily payed for.’’

    An other saying from Holland;

    ‘‘De zee heeft gegeven en genomen.’’ that is ‘‘The sea has given and taken.’’

    In the night of 5 on 6 March 1883 the twin village Paesens-Moddergat lost 17 ships and 83 fishermen from the 22 ships and 109 men that went to sea.

    All over the world, mothers are crying for their sons, wives for their men.

    Going to sea was not, is not, and will never be, a sort of easy game.

    We have to respect and honour that these people did it. Although, sometimes they have had the better piece of a living, when prices were stable, and nature did not claim too many of them. (compared with a farmer or factory labourer)

    But what am I talking. There are so many real experts around here, some even telling us that boats can nosedive. Who would have thought that?
    Some go to sea with a tent on a open dory, and call themselves experienced seaman.
    Idiots are all around, at the times when these men (the memorial reminds to) went to sea, those "experts" should not have opened their mouth in the presence of a fisherman.

    So, who does the next?

    I would do, but have to make some calculations tonight. Maybe later if no one takes it.

    Regards
    Richard

    We just observed the 30th anniversary of the Blackthorn sinking in Tampa Bay near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge after a collision with a tanker in 1980.
    From Wikipedia: In 1979-1980, Blackthorn underwent a major overhaul in Tampa, Florida. However, on 28 January 1980, while leaving Tampa Bay after the completion of the overhaul, she collided with the tanker Capricorn. Shortly after the collision, Blackthorn capsized, killing 23 of crew.
    Coincidentally, it was near the same time as the Skyway Bridge disaster when the Summit Venture crashed into it in the fog.

    We here just observed the 30th anniversary of the loss of the UScgS Blackthorn. Coincidentally near the time of the Sunshine Skyway disaster which happened near to where the fatal collision occured. 1980 incident
    This from Wikipedia:
    The collapsed original bridge on May 9, 1980 after the Summit Venture collision. Photo by St. Petersburg Times.Summit Venture was involved in a fatal collision with a bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida on May 9, 1980. While negotiating a required turn in the narrow channel during a storm, the radar failed, and the freighter struck one of the piers on the southbound span of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge. 1,400 feet of the steel cantilever highway bridge collapsed, causing a Greyhound Lines bus, among other vehicles, to plunge 165 feet into the bay. A total of 35 people died.
