Thanks to Google, I now know meanings of the phrase 'Dutch Lighthouse' that I'd rather not! Safe search set firmly set to moderate now! :D

I could have happily lived my whole life without learning that slang term.

Why did you let me have it? Oud Kraggenburg. Kraggenburg reads to be a delightful place. Somebody else go now, for sure.

Well done, Marc. Your turn, I'm afraid...;)

    Richard,
the left hand of Cervantes it was. A shot cutted a nerve and couldn't use that hand anymore.

That was not enough to stop him being a very brave man as he proved at the Lepanto battle. When captive and slave of the viceroy of Algiers, Hassan Pasha (five years), he demonstrated an unbreakable will and exemplary courage, and led up to four abortive escape attempts, always blaming himself as the full responsible person to avoid punishment to others. In 1577 some priests of the Order of Mercy arrived in Algiers with 300 escudos sent by his family for his ransom, but this sum proved insufficient. Cervantes suggested that the money be used to rescue his brother, also slave there, what was done.

A month later Cervantes led a group in an attempt to escape but again met with no success. He remained undaunted by punishments and threats, and the captives looked to him for inspiration. While in captivity Cervantes reached near-legendary stature. By 1579-1580 his family had raised a new sum of money for his ransom, and they entrusted it to two Trinitarian monks. The sum fell short of the 500 escudos demanded by his master, but Christian merchants in that city supplied the difference.

On Sept. 19, 1580, Cervantes was rescued on board the ship that was to take him to Constantinople, his master's new destination. On October he sailed for Spain and on December 18, in Madrid, he signed a statement about his release.

Matter for a nice film, isn't it? :)

    Cheers.

I'd love to see such a film! Instead, we get...well, without getting into specifics, Hollywood.
    Okay, here goes;

A grupo of volcanic islands. At first, uninteresting but for the life in the water. I watched one of these Mantas
    Manta6BAR_663x800.jpg
doing flips for ten minutes maybe - I was told he was feeding but I don't know. These islands are known for both fast swimming and powerful fishes, I once lost a 100 kilo fish to a bigger fish - with big teeth. This island,
    3.jpg
has a navy base. Our engineer helped them get their skiff running so that they could inspect us. An hour later, we were shocked to see one of these
    4b19c63d1b44faf916e9c7599a9f1ba2eb817a72_big.jpg
go by at what looked like 30knots - Do they have turbines? The most remote island keeps an eight-man garrison - Lonely duty!
    This island
    nd.jpg
HAD a species of bird of which the exact minute of extinction was recorded. This
    fdew.jpg
is the culprit. All vegetation was killed but grew back in just a few short years from seeds borne on the wind, waves, or bird droppings.
This "Island" (they call it an island and say it is 1.4 hectares but to me it is just a broken pile of rock - with guano. That's not snow!)
    .png
is the smallest but often has the best fishing and diving! Nesting on this island are a very common wideawake (some biologists say it is distinct) and an even bigger bird known for practicing obligate siblicide and NPAV behavior - what jerks!
These islands seem to get more interesting the more time spent there!

Revillagigedo islands, off the coast of Mexico.
Navy base in Bahía Vargas Lozano, Isla Socorro (originally Santo Tomás island, when discovered by Hernando de Grijalva, 12-21-1533)
    San Benedicto island, Bárcena volcano.
Extinct species: San Benedicto Rock Wren (Salpinctes obsoletus exsul)
    Roca Partida island.

    Cheers :)

Carumbas! You are too good! And I was hoping that the US Coast Guard Cutter on drug patrol would deceive!
