there are quite a few volcanos in the Kurils! :)

Ebeko has three craters, but I've yet to find an image of Ebeko that looks like your image. Atlasov has the classic beautiful shape of your photo, but I cannot find a reference to three peaks...

Not Atlasov or Ebeko. Search the southern big islands....:)

    Cheers.

Tya tya on Kunashir looks like a possibility. There are also some sea stacks approximately 13 km from the summit of the main cone, just South of due East, and some more approximately 13 km to the south west, and ranging East from that point.
Can't find any names or pictures of the stacks though!

    OK. Final clues:

    - The island was originally inhabited by Ainu, the native peoples of the Kurils, Sakhalin and Hokkaidō.
    - The first recorded visit by Europeans was in 1643, when a ship of the Dutch East India Company landed there, probably seeking furs.
    - Russian fur traders appeared in the 18th century, hunting sea otter and seizing foreign ships in the area.
    - In 1801, the Japanese government officially claimed control of the island. This would soon lead to clashes with Russia.
    - Changed hands between Russia and Japan several times.
    - In 1952 Japan finally renounced its claim to the island.

And the name of the the island is.......:p

I can't answer any more until I come up with a good puzzle, and I don't have any right now. It will be clues without photos I think.

    It was quite a row.
    Some came from Messina.
    Some came from *******.
It was a battle wher arquebusiers outmatched bowmen.
It was about 439 years ago.

Name the island to the west of the red x. name the battle. name the forces.

Well done Tiny. "Rock Island" in Urup it is. Volcano in the image was the Kolokol.

Nice teaser, Hoyte. I will stay out. :)

    Cheers.

    Nicely done, Angélique. Your turn.
Guillermo, I did not know that about Miguel de Cervantes. I am the product of public education. In the old map, where the cross is, there was a bay. That seems to be gone now, filled in and with a narrow river coming out at the southern end. That is why the red cross was in the wrong place. I was trying to find the name of that bay but couldn't do it.

It more looks like the barrier at the south side of the bay is gone and is now a shallow in the sea.

A previous quest was very close to this place.

A little nuance about the lost of the arm of Miguel de Cervantes. Fighting in the 1571 Battle of Lepanto Miguel de Cervantes received three gunshot wounds, one of them in his left hand which remained paralyzed for good. From then on his nickname was ‘el manco de Lepanto’ (the one-armed of Lepanto), although the arm was not amputated.

    New one is coming.....

    Cheers

Yes, the former small port is 8 km from the shore now. And the wrecks of the battle are buried under meters of sediment.

And was´nt it the left hand Cervantes lost, Guillermo?
