Trailer bearing schematic

    How'dee,

    Anyone know of a web site that has a schematic of trailer bearings and or replacement instructions? Just curious really.

    I've replaced bearings three times now and it really sucks when it's out on the road. We're heading to Sumberland key/Ramrod Key in a couple of weeks and plan to inspect the bearings this weekend.

    How often do ya'll recommend replacing bearings as maintenance or is it based on conditions when inspected? It's a single axel trailer that gets pulled 60 miles to the ocean about every two weeks. Or...do you just wait until they spin and change them then?

    I've got Buddy Bearings in and pump (15-20 times w/marine grease) them up until the seal is all the way out. It's a lot of grease!

    Any advice and horror stories would be appreciated.

    Seems that there is a problem somewhere. My trailer has about 20,000 miles and the bearings never failed. What is the weight of your boat? Maybe a single axle is not enough and the bearings are overloaded.

    This is my second boat and trailer. I spun the first bearing on the old trailer. The second time was on my current one, the third as a precautionary measure on the other side.

    The Boat is a 20' center consol, pretty light but the trailer is an Escort.

    tree times replacing may also mean something is done wrong. did you check bearings running hot, the wheel, old bearing? after tichtening the nut, half a turn lose again before the split goes in? another trick is putting bearings in a pan with liquified grease (but dont burn it) before mounting. hope this is of help, happy hollidays!

    Where is all that grease going? 15-20 pumps, you must have some big bearing buddies, or a small grease gun, I can fill mine in 3 pumps. Are you changing the seals when you pull the bearings? Are the back sides of your hubs covered with grease? If it’s not the seals, I would look at over loading or a damaged axel.

    Thank you for the "Bearing Service" page.

    I don't recall a rear seal inside the hub. I'll be sure to look. When purchasing new bearings and I ask for a seal, would the size of the seal correspond to the size of the bearings?

    When I said I'd replaced bearings, the first incident was on the old trailer, the second was on the new trailer and the third was done just good measure because of having to do the other side.

    They make repair kits that include the bearings and seals. If there is a lot of grease in the inside of the wheels, the seals may be leaking. They will let water and dirt in too. The inside bearing won't come out without first removing the seal. If it did come out when you replace them, then the seals are missing.
