Thanks everyone for taking the time out to post on this sh1tty topic ;)

I have read the website on the Airhead composting toilet (thanks Steve), and like Meanz have to get my head around the idea. It has a few other things I'm not too sure of but anyway.

Thanks for the education there Yipster, I was hoping someone would put some light on there the 'HEAD' comes from. I'm kind of relieved it is still a toilet :D

For the time being I decided to stick to port-a-potties.

It seems they operate easy enough, offer acceptable operation and hygene, and is easy enough to maintain. They are also unexpensive to buy, lightweight and does not require a through-hole that would sink the boat ;)

They are also common and available from many stores as is the solutions one use in it. I could also provide for an extra holding tank to assist the port-a-potty if so desired. The port-a-potties also looks neat and tidy. In a small berting area it should be the least to stand out feature  and it could be set up convenient in the available space there is.

Maybe one could glue a pot with realistic looking flowers on it so it looks even better just for that extra touch of class ;)

    Fanie,

"a small low power 12V ozone generator could also get rid of organic smells - we make those so it's not a problem."

    Could you provide details please?

Fanie, Never saw it(the toilet) but there was a guy running a charter cat on Port Hacking that had a composting toilet, I beleive it used a solar vent to pull the stink & dunno if it was a joke but I heard he had grass clippings or sawdust in it, the boat was called WOW Cruises & the toilet was supposed to be not much more than a glassfiber box with a normal seat on top- might have been more to it ?. Regards from Jeff.

Jeff, the composting toilet does use a powered vent which just draws milliamps but a lot of folks use a solar vent instead, its to help with the breakdown process and has the added benefit of having a continuous draw of of air thru the boat when it is left closed up so it smells fresh when you return rather than the disgusting holding tank smell that nearly knocks you out. They have peat moss in them and a crank handle on the side to stir the waste in.The Airhead has a seperate urine container which you put sugar in to kill any smell and you empty it over the side when its full. The guy we installed one for is a doctor and he just loves it.Oh,and we removed a large holding tank and replaced it with a fuel tank.

Thats a W on each cheek Jeff?

I'd really like to see one Steve, its so different to what I have been familiar with I need to convince myself it works well. I'm sure it does but you just need to see these things sometimes.

    Cheers

Meanz, not sure about the W on each cheek & have no idea whats alluded to, I'm just a quiet bloke from the suburbs, but the charter dood was a kinda local character & the advertising material for his business had a vibe to it, I think he's got some eco island caper going on now. All the best from Jeff.

Sorry Landlubber, I think my firewall tricked me into thinking my internet connection was off - all day long

The ozone unit is a product we make for a customer. You generate corona which changes O2 (oxygen) into O3. O3 is heavier than air and slowly falls to the ground, we use a slow turning little fan to gently push it out. All organic bacteria is killed when they get in contact with O3. The O3 is broken down quickly when you have turbulant air and it becomes O2 again.

In conference rooms they pump some quantity of ozone during breaks, then quickly breaks it down again with blowing air into the room. Removes smoking and stale odors.

The fresh air smell you get after a big storm is the lightning that generates 1000'ds of tons of ozone. Ozone is also used in large water purifying systems.

The unit we make works off 230VAC but the electronics is running internally off 12Vdc. The unit draws about 200mA off 12V and you can set it for 10% to 90% in 10 % steps. For a normal size bathroom you can set it for 10% to 40% otherwise the ozone would be too much and you will have that ozone smell that can be overwhelming in large quantities.

The units in the cat will have a 10 to 30 min timer, you can set it for the concentration of ozone you require (10% to 90%) and when you push the button it will run for 10 to 30 mins and switch off until activated again.

You set the unit to clear the air without smelling like ozone. I hate these spray tins of poop they call air freshner.

Ozone won't remove anorganic smell's, ie petrol, thinners, polyester resin etc, but for a bathroom, fish smells, and smelly living (or dead) things it is great.

I haven't tried bubbling it through water you wash your hands in to remove fish smells, but it could work.

So that's where the saying 'stirring ****' comes from...

So what do you do with the matter after it has become compost ? Put it in your plants on the boat ? Little did Waterworld know of this technique else his tomatoes could have been much bigger, and could have had a better color too :D
