Cruising people spend more than 80% of their time anchored up and exploring/socialising... Several people have astonished me by declaring they have a well stocked bunker... What for? No chance of a MAD nuclear situation and in that unlikely event - to go out with the bang may well be preferable...

Google earth is a useful tool in narrowing down the search area... I hope to be newly established before end of 2012... resins and appropriate hardeners will be readily available for a year or two, minimum, as will most other boat building equipment, materials and tools...

Not being into running a floating hotel business, mine is a 39ft x 21ft motorsailor cat of about 4.5 tonnes loaded...

Over here in NZ we have a doco showing at the moment, bout life after humans. It tells how the world survives and changes after we have all gone... and what happens to buildings, animals and the like, i have not seen all of it, but its pretty grim...and im still thinking that even tho it will be very rough when it hits the fan...i still think that being at sea (instead of on land) is the safer option... The question is are our boats going to be as strong as we hope them to be.... I sure as hell hope mine is, short of building an internal roll cage (maybe not a bad idea) im unsure as to what else to do.... I will get as upto date paper charts closer to the time as i think gps and the like maybe useless after a while, and looking at all options of freeze dried foods. Im also looking at trying the odd meal cooked with seawater instead of fresh so as to make my fresh stores last that much longer. ( safer to try now and on land than at sea)...

The big thing is, i can go shopping till the cows come home, but one can overdo it when it comes to stores, and other things, thinking that i may need this or that, when those funds can be better spent else where.... has anyone drafted up a shopping list yet?

I would suggest, just build a normal boat of the style (mono/cat/tri/punt or whatever, that you feel comfortable building and maintaining without external assistance for about 10 years....

Most of the BRIC and developing countries will see little change, - except less interfering by well intentioned "do-gooders" who do not have a clue as to cultural-sensitivity and local empowerment by skills transfer (not 'high-tech' technology transfer)...
