Steading sail design

    Are there any guidelines for the sizing of a steading sail for a displacement powerboat. I'm looking at the 35' to 40' size range. But I would like information that could be applied to smaller and larger boats also.

    There are no rules......

    But as gonzo says different sail areas/configurations will work better or worse on different boats, and in different wind strengths/directions......

    For instance this rig and sail looks scary weak and probably pointless on this wide, high initial stability, snap rolling boat......a barrel of water up the mast would do more to calm her down.....

    Whereas this one appears uselessly small in all but the highest winds......no doubt it will help keep her nose into the wind but she'll have to come around quite a ways (wind angle) before it starts to work.......
