Also in Jolly's post #8165 of the railway weed mower the driver wears a hat, and doesn't seem to be dressed for any manual labor . . . ;)

The starboard guy seems to be operating some pedals of the mower, so I'll guess the one in the back operates the engine . . . :)

Speaking of railroad contraptions and cool hats......this is another way to get rid of the weeds along the tracks.

That's three hats on the railway weed burner, now I wonder who's the driver without having a fight over it, since there isn't a particular tall hat . .

I enjoy your gallery, it is full of interesting photos!
Even the owner of this boat must have gotten a laugh out of that prop.

Actually, I don't see any purpose for that straw hat guy to even be there. The guy on the center seat would run all three levers to lower the mowers, it looks like a throttle quadrant on the front side of the seat, between his legs. Maybe the pedals engage the mowers. The guy in back, I don't know, at least he looks ready to work. Maybe the bow tie guy is catching a ride to the riot. Straw Hat Riot - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_Hat_Riot

I guess it was practice for railroad management to pose with the working men on their contraptions. Here is a rather dapper supervisor leaning against a velocipede with the driver ready to go.

Here is yours truly driving a velocipede that I helped restore. I turned all the new wood pieces on my wood lathe for the lever system and fabricated some new metal pieces to hold the levers in place.

These brackets hold the pivot rod for the long levers. They are not really visible in the photo above.

    Maybe from the riot.

The problem seems to have been tolerating teens acting out as self appointed enforcers of fashion. It was probably seen as fun to knock some guy's hat off and stomp on it and face no consequences. I'm guessing the "fun" grew a bit more rowdy year by year till it found youths unwilling to even play by the "rules" as set and then all hat broke loose.

They need some rear view mirrors, trains can be surprisingly quiet.

In the UK we seem to have a whole bunch of bizarre and daft ways for youths to get rowdy:

Though I'm fairly sure there's some daft sports the world over... :D
