    Michelin Pilot's?

Worst tyres I've ever used on my old NordWest - they came on it when new. Though they were the Pilot's of '94 vintage. Steering was all wrong, they would collect bitumen when hot, no grip cold etc etc. Had footrests on ground within 3 miles on a set of Pirellis......;)

94 is so far back, mind you not as far as my 650ss Norton, featherbed avons, ribbed terrible tyres, we had no choices much back then

Over this side of the Pond, those earlier Pilots' were called Pile'ems, so many people dropped bikes because they needed to warm up before gripping. I did around 15-16k a year on the NordWest and went through a set of tyres every 10 to 14k. The older Pilot profile was wrong for my bike, it 'fell' into corners so you had to thrupenny bit them, even a trained Police rider said they were dangerous on the Nordy! Piaggio cheapskating, and global price shoping, as Pirelli had developed a tyre specially for the Nordy - MT60 but they only last 3 to 4k and grip like hell. I played around quite a bit with sizes too, like from 120/60 to 110/80, 120/70 on the front.

I know Michelin learnt their lesson and the new ones have a very different more 'rounded' profile. That's without internal carcass changes which may also help. Also the Nordy at 140Kg is a bit lighter than the BMs'....;) but just as quick as the 'Brick' (90s vintage) up to 90 mph or so, don't ask how I know....;);)

It looks almost rickety enough to believe the boys on Top Gear (UK, never watched the spin offs) built it.

Which is to say: it's probably gonna end badly at some point.

    This was inevitable . . ;)

No one could foresee that the pontoons by the loads from the cranes might list just a little and so making the cranes incline sideways making the pontoons list worse and so causing a self-reinforcing effect which lead to the capsize of the cranes . . ‘‘Roll Eyes Sarcastic’’ emoticon

Luckily the latest news is that no one was hurt . . :)

Thanks, it's a fun boat. I really enjoyed re-engineering the drive system and getting some contemporary performance out of the ol' girl (1972). She was also featured in the ACBS magazine "Classicboat" (issue 122).
