A tow boat tow, a push boat push. Both are tugboat.
Big difference Angelique between both their name and function in the US.

What in the USA is usually referred to as ‘‘Towboat’’ actually pushes barges and often large numbers of them. Same as on the big European rivers, only there (translated from the national language) they are called ‘‘Push Boats’’ to their actual function. Must say they are bigger in the US since locks limits the total size in Europe. Yes they also fall under the collective term ‘‘Tugboat’’ as there are many types of ‘‘Tugs’’ but that generic name is not specific for the type that pushes barges.

    Cheers,
    Angel

This is some of the tug categories:

    Push boat tug
    Ocean going tug
Tug boat designed to tow or push
    Anchor handling tugs
    Long distance towing tug
    Salvage tug
    Fire tug
    Escort tug
    Tractor tug
    Ship handling tug
    Coastal tug
    Line handling tug
    Tow tug
Aircraft carrier tug (due to the high flare of the ship)
Submarine tug (due to the thumblehome of the hull)

Every tug is more and more specialized in their categories.
Some can be reconfigured, some are almost extinct.
In case of an assist tug, he can push and tow, if they work in pair. But they don't fall in the category of the push boat, they fall in the category of ship assist. They are not considered push boat, nor tow boat. Ship assist is a very high specialized categories. The tug does everything, including helping to stop and direct the ship (the most difficult task, very high risk of capsizing)
The push boat push barges in rivers, or they are articulate to push one barge in coastal trip. In high sea the barges are towed. Every one of these tugs are very different in design. From square box to very efficient hull. All have a common factor, the very huge amount of power related to their length, and the high displacement and draft. But not in the push boat, working on rivers, wide and flat mostly with relatively low draft.

All true, but it has nothing to do with the fact that what in the USA is usually referred to as ‘‘Towboat’’ actually pushes barges and does nothing else than that, so they actual are ‘‘Push Boats’’ as the rest of world calls them.

    Cheers,
    Angel

P.S. - Jolly's pic is a good example of what in the USA is usually referred to as ‘‘Towboat’’ and the rest of the world calls ‘‘Push Boat’’.

I found this explanation on line. "The term towboat arises from steamboat days, when steamboat fortunes began to decline and to survive steamboats began to "tow" wooden barges alongside to earn additional revenue."

Angelique: We tend to generally refer to the Halman as the Halman Nordica. The Halman being developed from the Nordica (same molds) with the Halman being modified with a cut away forefoot. This to improve turning ability especially coming about in light airs. Your investigation re. the Havsfidra and Midget 20's is new info to me and adds extra members to this family of what I consider the most seaworthy sailing craft within it's size. As a former dealer another modification we made was to remove the steel shot ballast and replace it with lead. It was not uncommon for their owners to make 100mile plus open ocean trips in these little ships. One has actually been sailed across the Atlantic. Thank You for this extra new info.

A yacht is not defined by the vessel but by the care and love of it's owner ----

Man this is spooky -- We just finished discussing the Halman, the Nordica, and the Havsfidra. I have never seen a Havisfidra and it's been 25 to 30 yrs since i've seen a Nordica. Yesterday up here in the north east Atlantic we had a bit of a storm with small craft heading for shelter. Our long deep water inlet (Shag Bay)being ideal saw a bit of traffic. Lo and behold, I couldn't believe my eyes, one being a Nordica. I kept looking out my window expecting to see a Havisfidra next. The photos show the Nordica yesterday safely in from the storm and anchored with a boom tent /netting and the other taken this morning she is heading back out to sea. This is the second time this has happened to me on the forum. The other being a poster inquiring about info on a Mariner 27. Another boat I had never heard of and had actually taken a photo of one the week before for that very purpose -- to inquire if anyone knew what make it was. However I was beaten to the posting by another member from the far side of "the pond" for that very same reason. It really is a small world out there.
