I can guarantee you that there are no lights in central west Australia as seen in those pics, there is NOTHING there.

Landlubbers comment calls in question the rest of the map. Would there be such a strong light on the Nile river in Egypt? That is a real question - never been there.
What about the north slope of alaska?

There have been so many faked light maps - specifically the one showing sunset over Europe.

It sure would be interesting to see this overlayed with Google Maps, so you could identify some of the locations.

I find it surprising too but they are also shown in the NASA video collage. There's a bunch of oil & gas rigs, and iron mines around there however that could be working nights . . .

Kalgoorlie. Newman . Tom price. Parubudoo. Telfa. Halls creek and fitzroy crossing plus all the mines around those towns. Anyone who is from western australia will recognise those lights

People always forget about the mines. Lots of phosphate mines around here don't show up on most maps but at night they light up the landscape around them.

It is odd that none of the large coastal towns are on there except for perth.

Can't see the working lights theory when the cities of Halifax in Nova Scotia and St. John's in Newfoundland show almost nothing. Working light emissions would be nil in comparison to the street lighting alone in those two cities. Possibly there is some cloud layering causing refraction of the light waves causing them to appear in the wrong location. If so this whole display while possibly accurate in total emission is not so geographically. One observation for sure is accurate . That being the eastern portion of the U.S. which I would say is the brightest lit location on earth. Hard to imagine but electricity from Churchill Falls Hydo in Labrador is firing up many of those bulbs. Have a look tomorrow night in Newfoundland -- you'll see much more light emissions with the traditional firing of the guns at midnight. :)

I think northern Italy and Northern France/Germany blobs are the most concentrated and bright. Of course... that is on the picture which seems to have "inconsistencies". Funny how you can make out the "grid" starting just west of the Appalachians to about mid continent... petering out in the western plains as they approach the Rockies.

Steve -- I was thinking more or less the largest area of overall average brightness. Then again we must consider that whole highly populated southern Ontario (GTO) Area would be included . Toronto and surrounding area being the New York City of Canada.
