    Hunter sailboats have had modular interiors for years, but that was nothing more than matching the capabilities of stick build to higher volume molded parts.

    I think I understand 'modular build' all too well -it's about minimizing investment cost over a wide enough product offering to achieve economies of scale your competition can't match. I guess I don't consider swapping a small number of unique parts (mast, keel, motor) to make a new SKU to be 'modular'. A real modular design has more SKUs than modules.

    SKU=stock keeping unit
    translation -things you sell, normally each given a unique number for tracking in a database.
