I had a visit from my nephew who is very rich today and he does not believe that climate change is caused by human activity, mind you he has not bothered to do any research on the subject. He drives a $90,000 auto today and had a $180,000 hybrid before that and he said the hybrid gave no advantages fuel wise.

Just asking people if they believe in climate change is not a satisfactory way of approaching the subject there needs to be a more comprehensive questionnaire.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. All this climate crap is a scheme by control freaks to enslave all of us.

    Confirmation bias and reasoned argument

Look at the peer reviewed scientific literature and empirical evidence for climate change. Look at the economic modelling of the costs of climate change. Evidence abounds.

I don't see evidence for your claim that: "this climate crap is a scheme by control freaks to enslave all of us". It seems to me that this dubious claim might ring true if it reads: climate denial crap is a scheme administered by conservatives (and libertarians - an unholy oxymoronic alliance to be sure) with vested commercial interests to enslave future generations.

I think of it as part of a demonic global governance scheme to unite the world under the leadership of a few elite people to geo engineer the future according to how those few wish it to become. Consider that to implement their controls on carbon means global power control over all the nations is required. That cuts into the life aspect of every human on the earth, how we live, what we can and cant do, our ways of using energy and resources, food, water, population growth, everything. The fear mongering is meant to persuade public opinion to allow - legitimize such things to give authority to make changes as they wish.

Arctic ice cap GROWING massively, returns to 1980s levels of cover
Don't panic - we're all still doomed, scientists insist

Recall when Gore and others said by 2015 there would be no arctic ice cap?
Well it has regrown a significant amount apparently.

And Antarctic ice is growing a lot.
Maybe the northern hemisphere will go into a mini ice age! How ironic for the global warming fear mongers, they will all be frozen solid. That would be funny, and they still will be spreading panic in the streets, fear mongering makes them money.

James Hansen: ‘Emergency Cooperation Among Nations’ Is Needed to Prevent Catastrophic Sea Level Rise

Emergency! Emergency!, your all doomed unless you sign over all your authority to be organized under a new global governance. That is the goal folks of these fear mongers.

Catastrophe! Death and suffering awaits all those who do not stop using fossil fuels NOW! Penalty of imprisonment and death to be proclaimed on climate criminals!

Sdowney, lest you run out of things to worry about, here's another. Sadly, if effective emergency plans are to be made governments will necessarily have to become deeply involved.

    Lies, damned lies, and statistics

Trouble with most reporting is the misuse and abuse of statistics: http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/files/2015/07/Figure2.png

    http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

One piece of data, a trend does not make. In this case the Register data was lousy. Wait till the end of summer, then some years in order to confirm the trend. Cherry pick a small enough sample from the global temp record and you can make any claim from the spectrum of possible claims. That's what the correlation coefficient is for. If the correlation coefficient is rubbish, so is the claim.

Yes, Antarctic sea ice has increased. No time to go into the science in detail. But I understand that the pole girdling low pressure systems have moved further north due to warming, expanding the sea ice cover and presumably the albedo effect. This doesn't mean ice cap melting has stopped. Far from it. The fact that these weather systems remain further north indicates that the equilibrium temps have increased.

Scientists are trained sceptics. Healthy scepticism entails a healthy respect for statistics.

The slogan that people fail to see past, like the shadows in Plato's cave

Global government! Communist conspiracies! What a con! The fear that our sovereignty, our freedoms will be lost to this demon!

The reality isn't so far from your fear - but not in the way you'd expect. Global markets are substantially deregulated. Capital flows with impunity. To the world's tax havens, leaching tax dollars from sovereign nations. Whether its the banks, the tech firms the big miners, it doesn't matter, they all do it. Banks take risks with shareholders equity (like hell they do). When they fall over the tax payer is asked to bail them out. Can't get the shareholders to take a hair cut, it has to be the average Joe paying his taxes to come to rescue cause the bank is too big to fail. It's called moral hazard.

The reality is that sovereignty is held to ransom by big business. Capital is free to move to tax havens, but the average worker is not free to move to whichever employment haven s/he chooses. Don't confuse freedom with free markets. Freedom is elusive, but best achieved through democratic representation. Look to history and the rights gained by workers through democratic processes. What was the revolution about? No taxation without representation.

A disclaimer: I was in business for most of my life. There's a place for the free market. The market can be innovative. Centralising those sorts of decisions is counter productive. Lots of markets fail and fail to even eventuate. That's the place for government. Social democracy.

Taxation isn't evil by the way. Imagine a society in which taxes and public infrastructure didn't exist. Pretty hard to get a start in life then unless you're lucky enough to be born with a sliver spoon - and fewer are born in to prosperity in systems without public infrastructure.

The 'truths' we flesh these Platonic shadows with invariably match our sensibilities. In reality it is vested interests that dumb down this process and flesh out these shadows with empty slogans that divert discussion from the course of reason.

    Plato's cave

I've removed the link as I've just become aware of the prohibition on all thinks political. I'll leave the previous comment as it was for now, as it is largely economic in focus - though it is responding to a political remark.
