I find your adversarial style unwelcome. But I was simply stating that if others used the reputation system as you did, Brent would already have been restricted from posting.

I still am not necessarily in favor of outright banning people. I think that sunshine is perhaps a better policy. As the repeated (endless) reintroduction of this tired topic I think is a public service. In my mind frame, more information, not less is better. But I think that limited access, or scarlet-letter type solutions as I previously mentioned are reasonable as it could provide a valuable warning to new users on the board, and especially people who are not members, but casual search engine wanderers would benefit greatly from such a caveat/warning sign as they no doubt would not invest the rigor to reading the hundreds of pages of backthreads.

No, Richard is not the only one pissed off by Brent, and you know that Jeff.
I think when a member use you and your platform to try to sell is product, product he exaggerate the quality, product he doesn't know, and insult the integrity of ALL the majors professionals and great amateurs, he should be ban for ever.
Now if someone buy a design from Brent and have an accident, your forum will be known as the forum who supported an ignorant by helping him to sell his product.
it is that simple Jeff. It is common sense.
Strange and bizarre idea yes by any mean, heated discussion about new ideas, yes and yes, amateurs who come to provoke the establishment, yes again, but using the forum to insult and make racist propaganda, sell a photocopy of book through your forum, sell plan through you forum behind you back, and in front of you tell tales of shear nonsense by treatind other like garbadge. NO it is not admissible.
    This guy is dangerous, OK?
Try to see it as someone who want to put is life saving in a boat and buy his plans. Thank to your forum. look at the result, Brent even do not know what stability is. And he dare to state that is design are the only one who works. He even insult great naval architect who are not here.
That pissed me off you keep him here.

    Also...

I think it wise that in the event someone is banned, or some other way chided, warned, etc there should be a public and permanent record. Like such and such person was banned from this site for such and such reasons. And links to the various threads.

It is a valuable information set for users/future users, as well as good legal documentation. ::thumbsup::

Addendum: Also, similarly it is probably wiser to lock/freeze accounts rather than deleting them. Other alternatives would be to just say lock the metal boats or shipbuilding threads.

Unfortunately it do not work with twisted mind.
We had some similarities with a guy who tried to sell a submarine.
same crap, just the other one was a smooth operator, but as twisted than Brent.
No the reputation system do not work. I saw someone with -5 and he is perfectly honest and nice.
Sorry, but its wrong to base the quality of a poster by the numbers. A twisted mind can play with that in front of all of us.

Richard said "Whats that Jeff? A attempt to make me look like the only one who is pissed off by BS ?"; I however never attempted or said that. What I said was that if other senior members use the post feedback feature as Richard did to give negative to posts which give bad or dangerous advice (posts which would call for someone being banned as a reasonable response), Brent would be banned now. Again, this was in response to Richard's public call to ban him in which he stated "We refused to reduce his reputation points (I did not)." I requested that if people waned to see him banned, it would be helpful if more people used the tool that is in place. I said or implied no more and no less than that. I know that you do not like the reputation feature; it is however a tool at hand, and I do like having a numerical basis to ban someone and a record of which posts which members have found dangerous. It is much more helpful to me than PMs between senior members and Richard which I have not seen for example.
Again, all I was indicating was that if these senior members gave negative feedback to what they feel are dangerous posts over the past months, Brent would be restricted now already.

It was not meant as a compliment Jeff!

Not as a attack either, but a cricital call.*

You are much less sensitive when the whole bunch of us senior members here is violently attacked by one member who abuses this platform mainly for free ad´s.

    * maybe my insufficient knowledge of the English language made it sound different for you and me.

    Be it as it is.

There have been serious complaints by several of us senior members about BS, both on the Forum and in private conversation. Several proposals how to handle the problem alike. But by so far no result.
A wake up call should be accepted, even when the tone was unwelcome.

    Regards
    Richard

...Lampy008's rep has already fallen to 5 from his default new-member start at 10...What did he say that was so "dangerous" in six posts?
The "rep" thing is pretty easy to pervert into a variety of cronyism...and makes the forum into a kiddies' sandbox.

I don't think it's that simple. I think information is always beneficial. For example if not for this thread, people would not know that you, Daniel, a respected naval architect, interacted with the seller of these plans, looked at the material and responses provided (or not), and warned people very strongly

(unless you have warned people on other sites, the yahoo group, etc. of this as well - I do not know.)

Others have also posted similar though less strongly worded warnings regarding the answers or responses given.

    As you yourself say:
Is a TV network helping a candidate to sell their product when they show a political debate or do an interview? Or by showing the candidate, unbiased, making their "promotion" and then responding to questions in their own words, are they giving the public an insight?

Unless I am terribly mistaken, the username K******* has been restricted, automatically, from posting in any new thread that any other person starts since 2/2010 because so many negatives were received through post feedback from a number of people. It's possible to redeem oneself if some valuable material is posted by the person put on "probation" in a thread they have started and members "vote" the person back up. But otherwise, they are restricted and can no longer post to any new thread that anyone else starts. There have been 8 members automatically placed in this restricted probation group to date due to the post feedback.

Thanks for the info! It was a recent post on a old thread I was referring to. I deleted my comment on that btw.

That last bit is true. However, do you believe that a person who makes personal attacks in response to design and construction criticisms, who makes demonstrably false statements even after the falsity has been pointed out, and who makes a racist attack on a board member when presented with data that doesn't match his preconceptions should NOT have their reputation score reduced?

Some one didn't like my tongue in cheek refference to the engineers. They rewrote my post so it's more friendly, I don't mind, after 23 years of being a lightkeeper I guess some of my social graces are tarnished, sorry to who ever it was i offended.

Lampy, people are a bit on edge in this thread, and I believe one word in your original post would have been offensive (in the context of the accusations made in this thread) to those who earnestly tried to offer their advice.

    It is is too complicate.
    Could we keep it simple?
A member come, make a 500 posts tirade with:
1- I am the best designer ever
2- everyone else is a crook
3- The yachting community is rotten
4- wood boat are a stupidity
4- frames are for the suckers
    6- Israel should not exist
7- boatbuilder in South Africa take underpaid labor
    8- naval architect are imbeciles
9- no thank you I don't want your help
    10- buy my book
    11- buy my plans
12-nobody know how to weld but me
14-I can built a boat in two hours
15-my boat cost close to nothing to built
    16-only imbeciles buy boat fittings
17-naval architect over-charge the clients for their own comfort

    And the list continue.

I will let aside the insults I received on my own professional integrity

As for the racist tirade, well, its soooo pertinent in a boat forum and completely sick.

And you let Brent Swain get away with that, for rep. point reason?

I asked Brent to substantiate and back his claim, he can't.
He doesn't know the first rule of yacht design, let aside naval architecture.
And he made these very dishonest claims to try to SELL his plans and book, on your own forum.

I presented a steel boat, showing the lines with all the calculation. Without any knowledge, nor asking me any question he decided it was a bad boat. Without baking is claim of course.

So now what? for rep. point rules I have to show only wood boat?
No thanks Jeff. I design also steel boat and want to show some of them. And even origami one, without this Brent <removed> interfering.

You know the Rev. Jones effect? think about when you read his posts.

Lying, it is the only reason of his 300 points, and certainly given by alias or completely taken innocents peoples.

    Think about that Jeff please.

    Thank you
    Daniel
