Bos, most states allow you to tow up to 10' without any thing special expect buying a yearly permit. Check out what states you need to drive through and the cost of a 1 year permit. No signs, flags, nothing, zero, zip, just buy a permit.

round here and given that I have farm plates on the truck I can tow just about anything of any size. But if you've done much towing you knowyour better off keeping it as narrow as possible. That reproduction Hacker above is only about 7 wide at 35 long, I'm still considering what to build but it wont be my retirement yacht but instead something just to get me on the water in style and keep me busy while I make some money working.

Those are all nice boats shown. Think if it were me I save up a bit more cash, perhaps borrow a good sized wedge from the bank, then build something with more deck space. Something civilized, with room for a golf driving range and extra amenities for the wife and kids.

I like this... http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Cruisers/GreatBear.html and extend the deck-house further aft but the aft cabin should run forward a bit (1 foot) to meet and be better visually balanced... Easy to build and sails well.... Bugger it Boston, I would like to see you on the water before I die... Stop procrastinating and BUILD...

the Atkins was one of my first choices but the option of modifying it simply doesn't work out to well. Whats funny is the modifications you suggest are exactly what I would do to it if I did give it a wirl.

Things are coming together Mas and thanks I'll see you on the water soon
    cheers

Boston: I saw this hanging up at the local grocery and thought of you. Just jump on a plane and come get it.

FYI, it's slushing horizontally here in Juneau right now.

Updated with a couple of pics I took a month ago when she caught my eye.

Bos, You'll have to get creative if you ever want to take people fishing up here...Treaties with Canada, poor economy, now, Saturday, we got our Charter Halibut Permit in the mail. Basically, it is a solution to the tragedy of the commons but excludes new entry into the halibut charter industry. The charters in SE are really selling a song and dance to tourists (and not much else other than scenery). They are already with a one halibut limit, can't fish rockfish in certain areas, limitations on salmon, I don't know what more they are facing but what I know is daunting. The value of the right to take six people fishing at a time is now $65,000 here, probably half that in SE. Meanwhile draggers bycatch more than private, commercial sport and subsistance. There's a fight for you!

    ouch
In Colorado as a pro guide I was spending about $125 pr season license, out of Jackson hole the shop held all the guide permits and licenses so I didn't have to worry about it. I had no idea it was so pricey up there. Thats nuts

on the other hand I've seen the size of the Halibut up there and one would feed a person for a week so I can kinda understand a 1 up limit

If one can find an open season and area, salmon and rockfish are still available for free. By treaty with Canada, and under pressure from the SE Alaska Longliners Association, they had to do something with the exponential growth in sport/charter halibut catch. It's a freak accident when they catch a large halibut in SE, don't consider those too much. One little halibut probably works out okay for them anyway with their mostly cruise ship customers.
