    Seems to have all the necessary stuff... A self-draining central "cockpit/steering saloon" which means easy engine access/removal... Why not consider the wheel to one side of the aft cabin bulkhead, mounted off the bulkhead (a bit unusual but can be done to good effect - port side so coming-alongside and other clearance is easy to assess)... - "red to red - safe to go ahead"...

    Yes indeed Masalai..that's a good suggestion. Much easier maneuvering. Also nice to be able to come alongside and reach for a dockline or drop a fender.

    Thats a great idea but it would also need throttle and trans control . I think I might like salon seating forward of the trunk cabin that doubles as a aft cabin access as well and loose the companionway style overhead always bash my head on hatch, which would be under the canopy anyway and out of the weather.

    prints should be here any day.

    Its 36' with a <10' beam. the stuff I've seen on it so far says its fine for harbor hopping and has a "good turn of speed" as well. Maybe my 175hp diesel will be sufficient who knows. More efficient use of space than the Atkin's and a lot faster in a pinch.

    I admire that boat most times I go to Ketchikan as we like to go to the KYC in Thomas Basin where this boat is. I think someone lives aboard.

    You're over your head in vintage stuff. I thought you wanted to do the trick in SE Alaska? The Atkin boat looks much more well mannered, seaworthy and comfortable than this new offering. Lake Washington is a good place for it. What happened to that raised pilothouse boat that was designed by a fellow whose name started w B. Looked a bit like a 49' DeFever. That one should have been a keeper.

    actually this latest is what looks like the prints for the Heida Princess that I thought I had bought a while ago but got sold out from under me by some unscrupulous scam artist, fortunately I wasn't dumb enough to reveal any bank information to him.

    This ones got about three feet more length on the water line for the same 36' overall length and greater interior volume than the Atkins. A deeper forefoot and a longer cleaner run aft. Its got a larger pilot house area and a larger trunk cabin as well as room for a complete head and kitchen forward. That and changing it wouldn't be bastardizing an Atkins which seems to be a big issue with some folks. Essentially this boat is the Heida Princes blue prints, but without the deep keel, which it might have by the time I'm done assuming this is my final decision, which is probably not a safe bet by the way.

    Ya the Atkins is a tad deeper draft but its not much and the express cruiser is on about the same par as the Atkins in protected waters in terms of stability, its a lot faster than the Atkins and its roomier for the same length. That and its got far more covered area that would end up usable space in the PNW were as you are well aware it rains, constantly. The Atkins would need some serious remodeling but this one is pretty much the way I would want it except for the hard top and the facilities lay out

    I'm always looking and am of course open to suggestions but I cant for the life of me think of who you are referring to in your last. If you remember it let me know.

    I think you know me by now, that is my kind of boat :) A beauty
    But becareful with old flush deck, they can be crampted if not large enough. In that case the aft cabin will be slightly small, even if the design show proper accommodation.
    If you go classic flush deck you have to go quite a good size, but you will have a much better boat than a modern tub

    that last is 36' on deck or exactly the same size as the Heida Princes which Tad mentioned was a bit small, so you hit the issue right on the nail head Daniel. One fix might be to just scale the whole thing up 10%

    there is also this one which is 40', but looks like its got the engine in the way of the trunk cabin option, so has a lot of wasted space aft which means no big nice head and kitchen forward. Also looks like it eats considerably more fuel.

    wont really know till I get the drawings tomorrow or the next day where that engine really sits but if the engine hatch is any kinda clue, I think I can take a pretty good guess

    the big dorky hard tops on both would be gone in place of something a little more refined but all in all the general look is there

    The engine has to be right under the bridge deck. Looks like there is a step-up (raised cockpit sole) just aft of the helm seat. Don't see how it could be anywhere else. The 40 has a narrower stern and a higher aspect ratio. Fuel burn should be close. I also like the better keel and propeller protection. Rudder looks small. My guess is that it will roll and could use some ballast. Should take a beating in head seas and be only marginal to OK w following seas. A cabin like my Willy wouldn't be bad on her either. What does the designer spec for power.
    My pic of Willy is in Thomas Basin. The same harbor that MatthewDS took that pic of the big long and low cruiser at. In the so part of downtown where most of the whorehouses used to be.
    The picture in post #261 was taken from the bulkhead in these 2 pics. The second pic shows part of Thomas Basin (the floats on the left). People fish off the bridge on the right of 1st pic ..walkway turns into a bloody mess. I expect we'll take a trip over there soon.

    Slightly OT, but related to the pics Easy Rider posted, would there be any interest in a "show me your harbor" thread? I think it would be interesting to see all of the different harbors around the world, but I'm a coastal engineer, so I'm kind of a harbor nerd anyway.

    Btw, Easy, people are going to stop taking SE Alaska seriously if we keep posting "blue sky" pictures of our harbors....

    I just got those prints I had posted a few pictures of. It was kinda funny, they mixed up the graphics on two of the sets so there's only one set of graphics for two different booklets. The wrote me back immediately when I let them know and offered to throw in a complimentary set. Nice folks over there at DN Goodchild and they have mountains of old drawing sets from just the era of style I like the most.

    I'm still at it and if this new biz venture goes well would like to be building something by spring. Deep breath included.

    I ordered a set for the "Broncho" design which is a 29' runabout cruiser with overnight capabilities

    its trailerable behind my F250 which makes things a lot cheaper getting it to the water.
