That's a good one, Captain Obvious. Water has no agenda, it just freezes a 0 degrees Celsius unless you add something like vodka, then it freezes at a lower temperature.

In addition to slumps, sinkholes and craters, Siberia's tundra is also forming bubbles of methane and CO2, possibly caused by rapidly melting permafrost.

A bit of a pity he didn't lit the methane when it escaped, since after incineration it's less harmful to the environment regarding global warming issues . .

I would like to add Bernie's comment that methane (CH4) is currently building up in the atmosphere (in the upper parts of troposphere and stratosphere) where at 75 mB level its amount has increased 30-fold in the last 3 years. This is very troublesome not because of risk of it igniting, but because it is exceedingly powerful greenhouse gas: molecule-to-molecule it is 256 x more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules. The recent accumulation occurs in high altitudes because methane is no longer sufficiently oxidised by hydroxyl (OH-) to a less dangerous greenhouse gas of carbon dioxide (CO2). Hydroxyl's presence in the atmosphere requires presence of water molecules (H2O) which are broken up by ultraviolet light to produce (OH-), but there are only limited amount of UV light available to convert water vapour to hydroxyl. As methane increased, it surpassed the atmosphere’s capacity for hydroxyl to oxidise it. It now ends up above cloud level in extremely arid upper troposphere and stratosphere where its atmospheric half-life grows considerably due to lack of water vapour. As a result air above cloud level is increasingly methane-saturated just as Bernie points out.

Pretty sobering. The thawing of the Arctic and the release of sequestered methane and soil carbon could create self-reinforcing runaway warming.

Study: Unaccounted ‘Ground Carbon’ Rapidly Pushing Earth Toward Climate Tipping Point | NVIRO NEWS

In a study published in Nature it was pointed out that most of the terrestrial carbon is stored in the soils, and as soils warm they release more and more of that carbon. This source of carbon has not been accounted for in climate models, and the positive feedback from soil carbon release may be close to putting Earth's systems over a tipping point from which recovery is impossible.

We keep screwing up like this, I'm more concerned about how well they work in steam, not ice.

Measure twice, cut once. It prevents "Damnit! I've cut it 3 times and it's still too short."
