New York Times -- Rising Temperatures Threaten Fundamental Change for Ski Slopes

… Under certain warming forecasts, more than half of the 103 ski resorts in the Northeast will not be able to maintain a 100-day season by 2039, according to a study to be published next year by Daniel Scott, director of the Interdisciplinary Center on Climate Change at the University of Waterloo in Ontario.

By then, no ski area in Connecticut or Massachusetts is likely to be economically viable, Mr. Scott said. Only 7 of 18 resorts in New Hampshire and 8 of 14 in Maine will be. New York’s 36 ski areas, most of them in the western part of the state, will have shrunk to 9.

In the Rockies, where early conditions have also been spotty, average winter temperatures are expected to rise as much as 7 degrees by the end of the century. Park City, Utah, could lose all of its snowpack by then. In Aspen, Colo., the snowpack could be confined to the top quarter of the mountain. So far this season, several ski resorts in Colorado have been forced to push back their opening dates…

Yeah. I''m a real menace to the world aren't I -- what with the way I spend my time on social engineering, jetting around the world, destroying the ocean environment with my pet footprint, trying to ruin families, working to raise your taxes, and using my great PR to hide the fact that I'm trying to control 'everything.' It's a miracle I find time to show up for work.

Some of you folks need to get a grip -- on something besides what you have in your hand at the moment, I mean....

Washington Post -- Can the U.S. adapt to climate change? Let’s ask the Colorado River Basin.

The Colorado River provides fresh water to nearly 40 million people in seven states out west: Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. A sizable chunk of U.S. agriculture relies on that water — about 15 percent of the nation’s crops and 13 percent of its livestock. The river even helps irrigate parts of Mexico and provides drinking water as far south as Tijuana. (All told, farms and ranches are the biggest users here.)

There’s just one small problem: The Colorado River will soon no longer have enough water to satisfy the region’s needs…

The dilemma is laid out nicely in a big new report from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which looks at the future of the Colorado River. The graph below is the key one.

The Atlantic Cities -- The Effects of Climate Change in One Gorgeous, Terrifying Video

So, wow. Wowwowwow. A group of filmmakers, making a movie called, aptly, Chasing Ice, have captured what they claim to be the largest iceberg calving ever filmed. After weeks of waiting, The Guardian reports, the filmakers witnessed 7.4 cubic km -- nearly 2 cubic miles -- of ice crashing off the Ilulissat glacier in Greenland. The movie, which is playing in the States in a handful of theaters and will be released in the UK tomorrow, follows photographer James Balog’s mission to document the Arctic ice that is being melted by climate change.

Ever FILMED.

The glacial retreat from the last ice age is documented, and it was HUGE.

We are STILL warming from the last ice age, and we are no where near the temps of the dinosaurs, if I remember correctly it had to be a hot house on earth for evolution to happen.

We need to be cleaner.

But, if changing ALL our refrigerant sped UP global warming, then how would we know less carbon emission would not speed up global warming?

Science Daily -- Insurance Industry Paying Increasing Attention to Climate Change

Dec. 13, 2012 — The insurance industry, the world's largest business with $4.6 trillion in revenues, is making larger efforts to manage climate change-related risks, according to a new study published December 13 in the journal Science.

"Weather- and climate-related insurance losses today average $50 billion a year. These losses have more than doubled each decade since the 1980s, adjusted for inflation," says the study's author Evan Mills, a scientist in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)'s Environmental Energy Technologies Division. "Insurers have become quite adept at quantifying and managing the risks of climate change, and using their market presence to drive broader societal efforts at mitigation and adaptation..."

Responding to shareholder, regulatory, and market forces, three global initiatives [UN Environment Program Finance Initiative (1995), ClimateWise (2007), and the Kyoto Statement (2009)] have compelled 129 insurance firms from 29 countries to engage in activities including: supporting climate research; developing climate-responsive products and services; raising awareness; reducing in-house greenhouse gas emissions; quantifying and disclosing climate risks; incorporating climate change into investment decisions; and influencing public policy. The ultimate goal of these industry activities is reducing climate-related losses among their customers as well as reducing their own exposure to risk, which is rising in step with the magnitude and frequency of extreme weather-related events…

Guardian -- Landmark climate change report leaked online

The draft of a major global warming report by the UN's climate science panel has been leaked online.

The fifth assessment report (AR5) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is not due to be published in full until September 2013, was uploaded onto a website called Stop Green Suicide on Thursday and has since been mirrored elsewhere on the internet.

The IPCC, which confirmed the draft is genuine, said in a statement: "The IPCC regrets this unauthorized posting which interferes with the process of assessment and review. We will continue not to comment on the contents of draft reports, as they are works in progress..."

Why leak the draft report?

General principles
The ethics of leaking tax-payer funded documents requires weighing the "public's right to know" against any harm to the public interest that may result. The press often leaks even in the face of extreme such harm, as when the New York Times published details of how the Bush administration was tracking terrorist financing with the help of the private sector Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), causing this very successful anti-terror program to immediately collapse.

That was a bad leak, doing great harm to expose something that nobody needed to know about. With the UN's IPCC reports the calculus is reversed. UN "climate chief" Christina Figueres explains what is at stake for the public:

... we are inspiring government, private sector, and civil society to [make] the biggest transformation that they have ever undertaken. The Industrial Revolution was also a transformation, but it wasn’t a guided transformation from a centralized policy perspective. This is a centralized transformation that is taking place because governments have decided that they need to listen to science.

So may we please see this "science" on the basis of which our existing energy infrastructure is to be ripped out in favor of non-existent "green" energy? The only reason for secrecy in the first place is to enhance the UN's political control over a scientific story line that is aimed explicitly at policy makers. Thus the drafts ought to fall within the reach of the Freedom of Information Act.

The Obama administration implicitly acknowledged this when it tried to evade FOIA by setting up private for communications with the IPCC. If NCAR's Gerald Meehl (a lead author of AR5's chapter on near-term climate change), has working copies of the draft report (and he's only one of dozens of U.S. government researchers who would), then by law the draft report (now finished) should be available to the public.

The IPCC's official reason for wanting secrecy (as they explained it to Steve McIntyre in January 2012) is so that criticisms of the drafts are not spread out across the internet but get funneled through the UN's comment process. If there is any merit to that rationale it is now moot. The comment period ended November 30th so the comment process can no longer be affected by publication.

As for my personal confidentiality agreement with the IPCC, I regard that as vitiated by the systematic dishonesty of the report ("ommited various fraud" as I called it in my FOD comments). This is a general principle of journalistic confidentiality: bad faith on one side breaks the agreement on the other. They can't ask reviewers to become complicit in their dishonesty by remaining silent about it.

Then there is the specific content of the Second Order Draft where the addition of one single sentence demands the release of the whole. That sentence is an astounding bit of honesty, a killing admission that completely undercuts the main premise and the main conclusion of the full report, revealing the fundamental dishonesty of the whole…

I would think that the opposite is true. Small governments are FAR more easy for a small group, or even a person, to take control of. It seems to me that large governments are much harder to control. Lots of people and departments going off on different tangents.

But I agree with Troy that a large country will, necessarily, result in a large government. The best we can work towards is to also make that large government responsive and efficient -- hard work indeed.

I didn't say it small government couldn't be subverted. I said it couldn't be wielded as an instrument of control, because it's NOT an adequate tool for control. Big government is.

During Bush admin, he trippled the fed, and Obama first term increased 40% more. The fed is 4 and fifth times larger than it was 12 years ago. Neither Bush nor Obama are conservatives.

The global warming proponents aren't conservatives either.

If by 'the Fed' you mean the federal government, those numbers are completely bogus. From an article written in January of this year:

Government spending as a share of the economy has hovered around 24% during the Obama administration, several percentage points higher than under President Bush, according to Congressional Budget Office data. It's also elevated from the historical average of 20.7% over the past 40 years.

Much of that increase has come from mandatory spending, including Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. Those programs have expanded mostly because of the recession, which has prompted more people to apply for Medicaid and Social Security, as well as the growth in people hitting retirement age.

Employees: The number of federal employees grew by 123,000, or 6.2%, under President Obama, according to the White House's Office of Management and Budget.

Much of the hiring increases came in the departments of homeland security, justice, veterans and defense.

The federal payroll has been expanding since President Bush took office, after declining during the Clinton administration. But it's still a tad smaller than it was in 1992, said Craig Jennings, a federal budget expert at the progressive think tank OMB Watch.
