Pretty good it appears...

The lesson to draw from all of this is obvious. The basic principles of climate science has been mature for a while. While there remain significant issues to understand such as the local response to global (human-driven) CO2 increases, the links between greenhouse gas emissions and greenhouse driven climate change is decades old news.

Perhaps, during this crazy summer, that news is finally getting past the denier screen and reaching the general public.

Harvard geoengineers plan to release gas to artificially cool planet

Two geoengineers from Harvard, David Keith and James Anderson, have announced plans to release tons of sun reflecting chemical particles to artificially cool the planet.

The solar experiment in geoengineering technology will attempt to replicate the observed effects of volcanoes that spew sulfates into the atmosphere which then reflect sunlight back into space and lower the temperature on Earth...

“The objective is not to alter the climate, but simply to probe the processes at a micro scale,” said Keith. “The direct risk is very small.”

SYDNEY: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the latest threat to seas and oceans besides global warming and atmospheric carbon, is causing an alarming spike in deaths of marine animals and plants, according to an international research team...

The marine life most affected by UVB are protists (such as algae), corals, crustaceans and fish larvae and eggs, thereby affecting marine ecosystems from the bottom to the top of the food web, according to a university statement...

"Whereas the Montreal Protocol was effective in preventing further deterioration of the ozone layer, this has not yet recovered, and now we know that damaging UVB radiation can penetrate to considerable depths in clear ocean waters," Duarte said...

Global warming could wipe out largest sea turtles

Leatherback turtles, the largest sea turtle species on Earth, could be wiped out completely if global temperatures continues to rise unabated, a new study has claimed.

According to the new study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, deaths of turtle eggs and hatchlings in nests buried at hotter, drier beaches are the leading projected cause of the potential climate-related decline...

"In 1990, there were 1,500 turtles nesting on the Playa Grande beach," said study co-author Dr James Spotila of the Drexel University. "Now, there are 30 to 40 nesting females per season..."

Emperor penguins depend on the sea ice that rings the continent of Antarctic, so it's no surprise that global warming, which is expected to melt some of that ice, may be bad news for these flightless, 4-foot (1.2-meter) tall birds...

At one end, the projections showed the complete loss of the penguins before the end of this century; the most optimistic projection predicted an increase in population until just before 2080 and a sharp decrease the last decade or so of the century.

The median, or middle, projection, however, estimated a decline [from 3,000 breeding pairs] to 575 breeding pairs by 2100...

Penguins are the only other animal other than humans to indulge in prostitution.

They have been seen to have sex in exchange for coloured pebbles to line the nest.

So I would not believe them if I were you.

Not emperor penguins but as you've said that your primary source of information is television, I don't hold you to a higher standard of knowledge than an 8 y/old.

Southern hemisphere cold currents are driven primarily by downwelling off of Antarctica in response to sea ice formation which excretes the salt, resulting in hypersaline water which has a higher density, so sinks and flows off of the continental shelf.

Not that I care one way or another.... I'm still hanging out for the promised sea level rise so I have a deep waterfront and can launch my boat at the bottom of my yard.

McDowell’s team is working on answers to some of those questions. They hope to devise a system that will help predict tree die-off around the world and the potential climate impacts as the forests die...

If the heat- and drought-stressed trees at Los Alamos react similar to the ones at McDowell’s Sevilleta plots, the piñon will die in about 11 months. The junipers will hold on longer, up to three years. The shrubby oak are likely to live the longest or not die at all...

“I can’t say this with absolute certainty, but I don’t expect there to be conifers in Los Alamos or Santa Fe County in 50 years,” McDowell said...

Global warming threatens China's march to prosperity by cutting crops, shrinking rivers and unleashing more droughts and floods, says the government's latest assessment of climate change, projecting big shifts in how the nation feeds itself.

The warnings are carried in the government's "Second National Assessment Report on Climate Change," which sums up advancing scientific knowledge about the consequences and costs of global warming for China - the world's second biggest economy and the biggest emitter of greenhouse gas pollution...

"China faces extremely grim ecological and environmental conditions under the impact of continued global warming and changes to China's regional environment," says the 710-page report, officially published late last year but released for public sale only recently...

"Climate change will lead to severe imbalances in China's water resources within each year and across the years. In most areas, precipitation will be increasingly concentrated in the summer and autumn rainy seasons, and floods and droughts will become increasingly frequent," says the report.

"Without effective measures in response, by the latter part of the 21st century, climate change could still constitute a threat to our country's food security," it says...

...Social-science research indicates that people with different cultural values — individualists compared with egalitarians, for example — disagree sharply about how serious a threat climate change is. People with different values draw different inferences from the same evidence...

Positions on climate change have come to signify the kind of person one is. People whose beliefs are at odds with those of the people with whom they share their basic cultural commitments risk being labelled as weird and obnoxious in the eyes of those on whom they depend for social and financial support...

So, if the cost of having a view of climate change that does not conform with the scientific consensus is zero, and the cost of having a view that is at odds with members of one’s cultural community can be high, what is a rational person to do? In that situation, it is perfectly sensible for individuals to be guided by modes of reasoning that connect their beliefs to ones that predominate in their group. Even people of modest scientific literacy will pick up relevant cues. Those who know more and who can reason more analytically will do a still better job, even if their group is wrong on the science...

An air-conditioner has become a sign of middle-class status in developing nations, a must-have dowry item. It is cheaper than a car, and arguably more life-changing in steamy regions, where cooling can make it easier for a child to study or a worker to sleep…

Air-conditioning gases are regulated primarily though a 1987 treaty called the Montreal Protocol, created to protect the ozone layer. It has reduced damage to that vital shield, which blocks cancer-causing ultraviolet rays, by mandating the use of progressively more benign gases... But these [newer] gases have an impact the ozone treaty largely ignores. Pound for pound, they contribute to global warming thousands of times more than does carbon dioxide, the standard greenhouse gas. The leading scientists in the field have just calculated that if all the equipment entering the world market uses the newest gases currently employed in air-conditioners, up to 27 percent of all global warming will be attributable to those gases by 2050…

Nearly all chemical and air-conditioning companies ...have developed air-conditioning appliances and gases that do not contribute to global warming... But these products require regulatory approvals before they can be sold, and the development of new safety standards, because the gases in them are often flammable or toxic…

With inexpensive HCFC-22 from Asia flooding the market, efforts to curb or eliminate its use have been undercut, even in the United States. For example, although American law now forbids the sale of new air-conditioners containing HCFC, stores have started selling empty components that can be filled with the cheap gas after installation, enabling its continued use...
