For a WW2 wargame. Sonar pings out to about 2500yds and is directional. Hy drophones can listen out to about 40-50 miles. Is a hydrophone directional like sonar and were they fitted to escort ships as well as submerines? What is the range of sonar in listening mode?

Range is only remotely related to the reciever's S/N ratio. Try

    http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/sonar.html

    or get the book

Underwater Acoustic Handbook (1960, Albers, Penn State press, LCCC 60-15968)

for an analysis of period capability.

Thank you for your reply. Based on the info Sonar is not really required as a listening device. If a destroyers listening capability is reduced to about zero at full speed. I have come up with a formula for listening range. How near reality it is difficult to know. Listening range in miles = 50 - (Speed in knots/36 x 50). A flower class escort would have a listening range of 27 miles at full speed.
