    Those ocean crossing races are all downwind and downcurrent. They probably drift as much as they row.

    When you said 'modern viking ship', I assumed you meant monohul.

    But if you want to go multi, a double outrigger would do fine.

    It would enable greater sail area (SA) per weight.

    I myself would consider a single-outrigger with some stores in the float. Then I would put all my oars on the side facing the outrigger, or maybe most of them there.

    The real problem would be sleeping arrangements for the crew. I figured that by the time I provided berths for half the crew, I would need enough Beam to make a monohull feasible.

    Are we going to a Viking/Polynesian hybrid? Perhaps they can wear horned brass helmets while dancing the hula.
