    Poets corner....

Market analysts talk about what they call "reversion to the mean." But maybe we should talk instead about reversion to the real.

A century ago Rudyard Kipling anticipated this when he wrote a poem that foresaw the decline of the empire of his country, Great Britain. Kipling's poem attributed this decline to the loss of the old virtues, the virtues that were listed at the top of the pages in the special notebooks, called "copybooks," that were given to British schoolchildren at that time -- virtues like basic honesty, fair dealing, Ten Commandments-type stuff. Kipling titled his poem "The Gods of the Copybook Headings," and its conclusion is a warning to the empire that succeeded the one he was living in:

Then the gods of the market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That all is not gold that glitters, and two and two make four,
And the gods of the copybook headings limped up to explain it once more.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of man.
There are only four things certain since social progress began:
That the dog returns to his vomit and the sow returns to her mire,
    And the burnt fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins,
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as water will wet us, as surely as fire will burn,
The gods of the copybook headings with terror and slaughter return.

Full text and more on the poem - - http://pc.blogspot.com/2008/07/gods-of-copybook-headings-rudyard.html , for more: http://newledger.com/2010/06/the-welfare-state-and-the-gods-of-the-copybook-headings/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gods_of_the_Copybook_Headings
    and also:....
    And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark, Satanic ... central banking systems?

I don't think Blake would mind too much about that rewriting if he was still around and familiar with the situation. He might even make it rhyme.

Here's something on the historic value of gold I found interesting....

Let's say you had a rich great grandfather who had an extra two hundred thousand dollars he didn't know what to do with back in 1914. This was a very hefty sum back then, and he figured it was much more than was necessary to keep a family going for many generations. At the outbreak of WWI, (which coincidentally started not long after the passing of the Federal Reserve Act) he becomes uncertain as to the fate of mankind and so he decides to bury it in the backyard. He divides the money in half and puts a hundred thousand in cash in one box and buys a hundred thousand in physical gold bullion which he buries in another box. Not long after he dies and the two boxes are forgotten as he takes their hiding place to the grave, not that it matters as his estate is quite large even without it.

Now, let's say that you inherit his estate. You spot a place that looks like it might make a good rose garden and lo and behold you dig up the two boxes as you get to work. The cash, taken at face value, has lost an extreme amount of buying power. Consider that one could buy a loaf of bread for a nickel or less in 1914, a Ford Model T would cost one $99 dollars and a very nice house would cost one three thousand dollars or less. I'm not sure but I would guess that mansions would run from ten to thirty thousand. Although a hundred grand is still a good chunk of money today, it would only make a very nice down payment on most homes and you'd still have to take out a mortgage. You certainly couldn't easily buy twenty or more rental properties with it like you could back then.

Ah, but you also got the box of gold. While that gold had the exact same purchasing power in 1914 as the face value of the cash, it's purchasing power today is much more than a hundred grand. Let's do some quick math. The average cost of an ounce of gold in 1914, according to this chart by the National Mining Association, was $18.99. A hundred thousand dollars would have bought $100,000รท$18.99 per ounce, or 5265.92 ounces of gold. Today's gold price, as I write this, is $1664.28 per ounce. The gold has the purchasing power of $1664.28 per ounce multiplied by 5265.92 ounces, or $8,763,981.04 in today's dollars. Do you see where that purchasing power has been stolen? That's $8,663,981 in purchasing power that's been lost. That means that a hundred dollars used to have the purchasing power of approximately $8,764. Ten dollars back then was like approximately $870 today.

Is there really any gold remaining in Fort Knox??? Seems nobody really seems to actually know...

A rose garden is her delight, but is a little pissed as they are all supposedly perfumed - NOT SO... maybe that assurance implied "apply your own perfume"...

Fruit trees/vines approaching 40 different varieties, mulberry crop is heavy and first season... Pumpkin, watermelons, bananas and papaya are a bit slow...

Enjoy... and let us know if you manage to get yourself arrested.:)

Frankly, I have more sympathy for those folks than I did for the Tea Party jerks who were out harassing Congressmen, for trying to hold town halls where they could have an honest give-and-take with their constituents. But since this bunch apparently has no objectives beyond simply registering their discontent, I'm not sure what they're going to accomplish -- if anything.

I'm impressed by the staying power, however. I figured there would be a couple of day's worth of protests and publicity, then we'd fade to the next entertaining news story.

Good on you all for getting out and protesting... In Australia, the citizenry are all still in denial - much as is to be expected...

If nothing else, It seems to me that there is a global malady afflicting ALL politicians, - Not a working brain-cell between them... Express disappointment at the cretinous incapacity of all politicians to do ANYTHING....

As for Australia... - - For our Prime Minister (hallelujah?) receiving an international award for "courage???" WTF-in-H... Got me beat... Would have difficulty in organising the "proverbial" with a fistful of money, and all the hookers standing there expectantly, whilst all fellow MP's stand around drooling & panting in anticipation... NOTHING IS HAPPENING... Is that what is meant by "Courage"?

On the other side of the parliament, "Bigears'-in-budgie-smugglers-always-say-NO", with his sole claim to fame - as half of a comedy duo Abbott-leader-of-the-opposition & Costello-wannabe-spat-the-dummy-opposition - with apologies to the originals - but they really have those surnames.... and they are not even funny - except in a tear-jerking way...

    Goodday,

My name is Mrs Tina Ncube, a native of Zimbabwe and a widow with two daughters. My late husband Mr Raymond Ncube was a farmer.A Cocoa farmer who own many branches across countries like Ghana,Cote Voire,Senegal and europe before his sudden death in the year 2008.

He was very wealthy in cocoa farming to a point became envious of his fellow co-farmers associates who later on assinated him out of jealousy. Since after the death of my husband i and my two daughters have suffered so much pains and humiliation from the hands of my late husband relatives. We have been deny of our right to his estate/properties simply because i did not bore him a male child. According to the tradition of the land, This means we are not entitle to any of his estate/properties only except i have a male child as the heir. And so we were ex-communicated from the family and left with nothing.

But, unknown to them i was able to posses one of the claim documents of fund which my husband deposited with the apex bank valued Twelve Million United States Dollars
($12,000,000,00) without their knowledge. So right now am using this opportunity to seek for your assistance to help me and my daughters claim this fund from the bank by appliying as the beneficiary to the fund. I have all the necessary documts for this claim and shall provide it to you as we progress further. I will not be able to apply for this fund at the
moment because am so afraid right now, I don't want any of my husband relatives to know about this fund. We are still afraid of them and again we don't want to allow my late husband's fellow cocoa farmers to know about our whereabouts.

But my questions now are: (1). Can we trust you enough not to betray us?(2).Will you be very sincere and honest with us towards this claim till this fund gets into your account?(3).
Will you help us gets a visa to your country as soon as this transaction is completed?
(4).Will you accommodate us and help my daughters get back to school in your country?

I am offering you 30% percent of this fund towards your assistance on this claim while the
rest 70% percent will be for me and my children to live on. At this junction i will like to
establish a good relationship with you, so i want you to give me the following details below:

1.Your full names. 2. Your nationality. 3. Your phone number. 4. Your occupation. 5. Your Age.

As soon as i hear from you, I shall give you more details and directives on this claim.

    Regards,
    Mrs Tina Ncube.
