I contacted the Maryland Cummins Marine distributor and they quoted me nearly $20,000 for a new 4BT. Seems kind of high for a bread truck engine and it seems, since you need to go through a ditributor, there is no competition (and subsequent competative pricing)

Does anyone know another source? Preferably remanufactured?

New ones shouldn't be much more than $5-6k and rebuilts maybe $3k,go look on ebay...there's always someone selling.

I looked and there's a new one in Oregon.Go to google and search for..... 4BT sale.

Total reman kits are $600...if you know a good mechanic and find a used one...

Does the boat style require a "marinized" engine?

The usual work boat keel cooling with dry stack only requires the tranny to be hooked up , basically to a truck engine.

    NOTHING cheaper or more reliable.

Twin Disc tranny would be my first choice (rebuilt), and I would hardly bother with a rebuild on a low time truck engine.
50 miles on the speedo is contemplated as 1 hour of run time.

Hope you found one but if not , try John Deere. they are Reliable, cheap realitively and available everywhere in the US. We have one that has 2700 hrs on it and starts and runs every day. Its a 4 cyl Turbocharged Aftercooled engine. Mounts are different than a Cummins but shims can fix a lot of things.

The boat is a Smith Island Crab Scrape (http://scrapeboatstella-r.blogspot.com/p/build.html) which has a low freeboard. I would live to say I have a Deere in it but I am concerned that it (4045) is nearly 300 pounds heavier.

Considerably cheaper than what I paid for mine in Australia
    $16,000 each with ZF25 gearbox.

The way to get a John Deere is to go to the FARM dealer, and tell him you want a factory rebuilt , but have no core.

A few times a year they do great pricing NO CORE REQUIRED.

The JD dealer will call rapidly , fear not.

A used Twin Disc and you are in businerss.

If a wet exhaust manifold is needed , there are aftermarket sources , no need for JD prices.

I would do that in a heartbeat ... but when I e-mailed them, they said I wasn't in their district and would have to go to the guy that quoted me 20K

    Hi,

I am building a 30' workboat that I'd like to power with the 4bt.

    It will be keel cooled.

How much is the complete engine package?

    Thanks,
    Robb

Pick it up in Virginia. U-Haul is your friend.

Time to contact Cummins headquarters and complain.

Send me a note when you get one, buy me some diesel and I'll go get it.
