    Gary, do you have any photos of Bernard Rhodes little Klis or the mk 2 version with the foils in the amas, certainly a cool little 22ft plywood tri that sailed halfway around the world in the 60s? Any scans of articles from Seaspray magazine would be great

    Here's a drawing of the Klis 11 cross section and foil, Steve. I've got some other Sea Spray stuff - will dig it out.
    Keysdisease, that group around Steve Dashew were three decades ahead of their time.

    Since all the sailing nutters are crouched over computers here watching the Volvo racers beat around North Cape (Groupama is 90 miles ahead and tacking into the Bay of Islands) - hunted out some more early multihulls as a break.
    Along with Paul Ricard, Hydrofolie was the first ocean racing foiler 1979 - the boat still exists with the Golden Oldies.
    Formula 40 Biscuits Cantreau 4, here on Lake Geneva with very tall rig; this tri, I believe, is in Auckland being fitted out (down sizing rig) for local conditions.
    Technique Avancees, 44 knots over 500 metres.

    Speaking of Golden Oldies Gary, they could use as satellite liaison for New Zealand and of course the Austral antipodes.. If you've ever raced Groucho it might be old enough to qualify....It would be fun to see how the designs from all 4 corners of the time sailed with each other.

    Thanks Corley. Beautiful lines and beams design on that proa. Like to hear what Rob Denney has to say about the shunting. Obviously the crew are just getting to know the boat. Incidentally the filming was done by one of the Foils editors, Fred Monsonnec. http:/foils.wordpress.com

    Beautiful indeed, but a bit cramped downstairs, I suspect!

    That is the fastest stayed mast and jib shunt I have seen on video. They usually take 2 minutes or more. It is so much easier with a rotating, unstayed, balanced rig and 360 degree rotatable rudders. See 13mins.50 secs into the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wftyqI2aJlo for a 20 second shunt. This is also a new crew getting to grips with a boat they have only sailed once before. And before you ask, the rudders are incomplete, will be a lot drier when they have the fairings on.

    This just came up on CL. It's a 1954 34' Brown/Kumalae design/build. I wonder if it's FG although I suspect it's ply. I'm not affiliated but thought it's really cool. Hard to find one older than this.

    Classic Makani Kai, one of the original Waikiki Beach Catamarans. Built in 1954 by Woody Brown and Alfred Kumalae. This boat belongs in a museum yet is in amazingly great sailing condition. She is in good shape with newly built wooden bow and stearn beams and curved wooden tiller bars. Hulls are in good condition, recent exterior paint and very nice sails. She has a real nice trampoline on the bow and steal ladder for easy access. She sails like a dream. It's a real pleasure to sail such a treasure. For those of you who are interested in learning more about her design and how she was created you can look up the article titled The Modern Hawaiian Double Canoe in The Journal of the Polynesian Society, Volume 68, 1959. There is an amazing 5 minute video well worth watching about her sister ship Manu Kai, found on YouTube if you type in the keywords Woody Browns Manu Kai. Looking for someone who can maintain this lovely lady the way she should be. Please only serious inquiries.     Pretty sure this rig is not being downsized. Rather up specc'd to handle the rougher conditions (new, thicker, rigging etc). Tri is down at Okahu bay, and worth visiting. She looks amazing.

    Thanks Clipper, I'll go and have a look. Yes, why downsize when it comes with that monster setup; one can always reef. And overpowering rigs is the flavour of the times ... but it is quite tall.
