I would be interested in this reprint as well. Please put my name on this "list" if it's still an option.
I noticed there hasn't been anything reported since this last August. Did this issue die?
    Thanks,

    "Common Sense of Yacht Design"

It looks like the book is a very valuable reference. Could someone
say something about the contents of the book.

I have until now bougth "Capt. Nat Herreshoff" and "Sensible Cruising Designs" (has not arrived yet). I would definitely be interested in a reprint of "Common Sense of Yacht Design".

My opinion is that books should be printed as long as there are potential buyers.
A reprint of "Yacht Designing and Planning; Chapelle Howard" and "Skene's Elements of Yacht Design; Francis S. Kinney" would also make some people happy! The authors wrote these books in order to share their knowledge with others.

    Reply from Tiller.... (today)

"You have indeed heard a true rumor. We're working on CSYD and it may be another year before it gets out. At this time, we expect that it will be a combination, two volumes in one, edition in hardcover at something about $100.
    Thanks for your interest. "

    Keeping a List

 BBs, Forums, etc. being what they are - along with hackers causing servers to crash and people changing email addresses - might it not be an idea to solict some sort of "snail mail" list of those interested. I know my interest will not have diminished in a year or so's time (probably the opposite - I'm already salivating at the thought of being able to buy a copy), but who knows what may have happened to this forum (or my ISP) by then.

Does anyone know the status of this publication?

It has been more than a year since this post. Is publication getting close, or is it not going to happen?

    DVD Edition

I think it is quite feasible to get it out on DVD with a much lower initial investment.

Considering that most people have switched to high grade monitors, that you can actually stand to read from for extended periods of time, it is an idea which time has come.

In a higher production run it could also be coded in a higher level markup language and become screen independent (flexible text resizing helps reading). The illustrations is actually the easy part.

Say so if this interests you, I have friends in the document management business that does this every day.

It sounds like a great idea. Specially since it can be translated to any language much more cheaply.

Maybe you mean CD rather than DVD? That would be nice, since you could rip things out of it for inclusion in bulletin board messages. :)

Flexible text sizing would be a must.

I would be interested, but also still interested in the Hardcover. I like Books. I had Doug Peterson's personal copy for years, but returned it to him about 3 years ago and have missed it since.

I think you would have to contact http://www.tillerbooks.com/ to get rights for the CD? You need BOTH volumes, I & II. What would be the cost? If we have rights and a large enough order I think I know someone in China who can produce them. If the run is too small (and I suspect it will be) we may as well burn them locally.

    CD vs DVD

Low volume would probably have to be DVD with PDF files containing scans of anything to complex to machine convert to text.

Higher volume would justify full text conversion - OCR programs are not perfect so some editing would surely be needed in considering the specialized language. It could still spill over to a second CD - someone said 500 pages.

It is not necessary so send it overseas CD/DVD Replication (stamped like commercial disks) is not that expensive. Duplicated CD (less expensive in lower volumes) are "burned" for that reason even good ones have reduced compatibility and longevity.

I don't have the books myself, page count and a few sample pages is all that is needed for now.

    Data DVD that is.

A Data DVD would behave like a CD. Video clips could be included on either space permitting.

I too would like to have a copy (used or re-print) of "The Common Sense of Yacht Design," if it could be had at a very reasonable price. In the meantime, I got a copy of the two-volume set to peruse through my local public library via "Inter-Library Loan." All that is required is a valid ISBN (the numbers vary by publisher or re-print).

Not being a professional designer or builder, it was more of historical interest than practical guidance. Before comitting to a three-figure price, I would recommend a preliminary look-see via ILL.

Last I knew.. "Tiller" was working on republication. I think there remains a ready market for this great book ... and hope they will have it ready soon.

I'm just jumping in and haven't read the whole strand, but my favoraite place for looking for out of print books is <www.alibris.com>. I just did a search for "Sensible Cruising Designs" and came up with four (4) hits ranging from $15 to $86. Here is the search.

    http://www.alibris.com/search/searc...f&matches=6&qsort=r&cm_re=works*listing*title

I have purchased most of my old text though them. Barnes & Nobles online has an out of print sight too. I don't think their pricing is as competative though. It's always a compromise between the books' condition and price.

I don't remember how much I spent on my copy, but usually don't go over $35 on a book though.

One more edit. I think this is the greatest resource for out of print nautical books. If it's been printed, you can usually find it here, eventually.

Email received from Tiller Publishing this morning, 11 OCT 05, in response to my inquiry about their pending re-print:

"The book hasn't been printed. At this time I don't know when that will happen. Please feel free to check back regarding the status of book.
