Volodiaja's Universal Tracker is operational again. It is showing Sodebo Ultime and the IDEC Ghost the Vendee Globe Fleet and IDEC and the BPV ghost.

I still wonder about the sense of the short rig. I get the less crew, less weight mantra but it's also less horsepower in light conditions. Loick Peyron reckons it's a valid strategy so who am I to argue but it surely leaves them even more at the mercy of the weather as their average speed drops so much in the light. Stan Honey reckons that he routed more for low sea states than wind when he was in charge of nav as the boat is badly effected speed wise by even moderate waves.

Stan Honey also said you have to start a lot to get the right conditions to better the record so who knows next start they may nail it. My impression is that there is some urgency in getting the record which I think is driving the attempt to find another weather window this year. The Jules Verne trophy is after all the record to which every team that is capable wants to lay claim. The Spindrift team with Spindrift 2 certainly has the performance to better the record but are not going to attempt it again until next year.

The IDEC team have left the dock at Brest in preparation for a start in their pursuit of the record.

A recent look at the tracker indicates that the IDEC team are now 51nm ahead of BPV's reference position and if they can stay South they should be able to build a considerable lead. Agreed semelis I'm thinking there must be some sort of record in the daily averages we are seeing at the moment.

It will be interesting to see how long they can ride that pressure system.
