What's wrong with that? At least it's in a format we Australians can understand and appreciate.

You missed my point, and one that Troy brought up earlier.
Every major city has areas that are dangerous and that it would be foolish to go into at night, and/or alone, and/or if you are a woman, and/or if your ethnicity or clothes aggravate some nutters.

    Good :)
And I think that advice must be taken with a pinch of salt.
How do you walk through an airport or a train station being more alert?

If you stay to long on the subway station watching your map before you start walking, alone because all other's left, then you increase your chances of being mugged.

Your chances of being a victim for a terrorist attack is anyway microscopic compared to other risks.

And, again, what is terrorism? 50% of the terrorism related violence in Norway and 100% (the one) of the killings was done by mossad agents and the victim was an innocent immigrant from Morrocco. Sorry for repeating myself here, but it's so easy numbers 1 out of 2 incidents, as far as I know.

Yes, Fox News is US right wing propaganda. No question about it.

CNN, NPR and many other sources often run stories with left wing propaganda, while sometimes doing objective reporting.

Two sides of the same coin.

The liberal media and the right wing media have succeeded in dividing our country into two barrels of moronic monkeys who cannot unite to fight the common enemy of their freedoms, rights and wallets.

Your poster below just proves my case.

Quoting a favorite TV show of mine: "The average American voter is as drunk and stupid as ever."

By dividing us, large corporations and special interest groups that profit from things like laws requiring motorists to buy insurance and defense spending will be able to do anything they want. All the while, you extremists b*tch about each other.

Extremists are a large part of what's wrong with the USA.

Your political posts aren't very level headed for someone hailing from the part of Maine you live in. We New Englanders were born and bread to be independent and distrust large things like corporations and the federal government. Why are you swallowing everything you see on Fox News hook, line and sinker? You should know better than to trust a large company like that. Just think for yourself.

Eh... I take back the last paragraph. It's a bit of personal attack. Sorry about that.

Yes, and Detroit is still more dangerous or has more of those areas than for example Adalaide, I would guess?

Good GOD Detroit is scary! I've been through there by boat and stopped to get fuel and stay the night. Went over to the Canadian side for safety. It was a scary place.

Of course. There is a similar fear of sharks in Australia, even though you are more likely to die driving to the beach.

I remember reading that after 9/11 the number of door locks sold in New York increased significantly. Real or imagined, the threats do have some very unusual consequences.

The issue isn't if it's scary or not.
Taking the subway to Brooklyn with only black people around you can be scary for a pale Norwegian with skis on his shoulder, but most likely it's completely safe.
Just as safe as being on the subway in London or on a train ins Spain or France.
    Statistics...

Yes, but there are definitely some areas in Adelaide I would warn people against. In Sydney there are areas where taxis will not pick up passengers after certain times.

Gun-related violence is another matter completely. As an example, for a while our statistics were completely skewed by one madman who killed 35 and injured 21 people in one day.

Keep safe (and watch out for sharks!)
    Leo.

Well, in a sense it is. Governments issuing statements like "Europe is more dangerous than USA" plays on fears (and gullibility).

Of course it's safe. "Normal" people would be worried about what you are going to do with those pointy-ended stocks.

Governments must issue statements to alert " simple " people that the world is not peaceful like their very own Simpson's Springfield hometown. Many people...no matter what country, have never owned a passport, have never traveled and legitimately need to be forewarned.
Watch out for sharks and sea snakes in Australia !!! A legitimate travel advisory...... yet very few people are attacked and the Australians have a good system to promote awareness.

Objects may appear closer in the rearview mirror, dont drink the bleach and careful....coffee is HOT

    H.L. Mencken put it beautifully:

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Are there vampires in Germany? And they write books?
