It would be a nice but less accessible location. I am surprised how they build new compounds in expensive locations for every AC while they work to lower the cost to get more participation. I would think that facilities and logistics are a big percentage of campaign cost. I wonder if the intent is to even the competition by making every team build new.

The article snivels about SF paying $5 million to host AC 34 and says they didn't get as much as expected -as if they lost money on the deal. SF has a real attitude these days -they expect every rich entity that sets foot in town to hemorrhage money and then they protest that all the money is making things too expensive for the poor. Bring it to Chicago!

There is still a lot to do to make this happen. I wonder what they are going to do about the whales. I am not sure if they can do the race and all training off season.

I am amazed that anyone would think that taxpayers should spend even a single penny to subsidize a race between billionaires! Sailing is a sport enjoyed by an infinitesimal segment of the population and the Americas Cup is even more a game of the elite, why should any public funds go to help defray the costs Mr Ellisons hobby?

I could argue I'd much rather see an America's Cup come to my home town than the Formula 1 circus we get lumped with each year (which cost us 50 million last year). We subsidise a massively profitable organization for the pleasure of hosting their race. It's really just a matter of what portion of the elite that gets the nod for support, how many people get to slip behind the wheel of a formula one car and take It for a spin?

No question Hawaii would be a great venu for this and other races. The weather should be better overall that's for sure, not to mention all the other good things Hawaii has to offer.

The only setback would be travel costs for spectators. Because of this attendence will probably be less.

joe, one of the best things about a hawaii venue is the time difference...2 or 3 hours later to west coast; 5 or 6 to the east coast; europe would need to get up a bit early to catch it all, but not too bad. perfect for carrying the races live. afternoon races would be terrific.

My impression from the articles I've read is that Larry wants to take the AC to Hawaii but that it's not a done deal and they were still discussing other venues. Makes you wonder whether it's not just a means of applying leverage to San Francisco and other venues.
