With a bean-fed horse or two the whole thing could have been faster and simpler. You'd think reverse could be achieved by simply turning the horses around, but probably when they get out of their cages they head straight for their stable. Anyone wondered what that guy in the funny hat holding the lever is doing. Actually, most of the guys are in funny hats but you can see the one I mean.

(my dog wants to know about this, just in case you think I'm off topic)

    Hi Terry,

Tell your dog this: Maybe the crown-wheels on the paddle axle are so far apart that the pinion on the drive axle only touches one of them. In that case the 'funny hat guy' could be operating a lever that moves the 'pinion end of the drive axle' from port to starboard. If so, you actualy have a front and a back gear and there is nothing wrong with the pic! If both crown-wheels on 'one continuous paddle axle' touches the pinion at the same time nothing could rotate at all. That's what I thought to see in the pic first.

    Cheers!

    Hi B,

That's the 'funny hat guy' Terry and I were talking about.

On the drawing the paddle wheels and the two crown-wheels are on one continuous shaft.

The bottom drawing shows the lever's attachment to the 'pinion end of the longitudinal drive shaft'.

    Cheers!

Angel, I already told my dog all that but she wouldn't believe me :)

Boston: "works the same with girls" ... ??? Could you elaborate on that? On second thoughts at my age I don't really need to know

Terry I'm sorry that I confused your dog with my first thought about this subject. Now I've loaded the heavy burden on your shoulders to explain it better to her.

    B. might be a bit confused here as well. When flipping a lever on a person he's probably dealing with a guy as I have never seen a lever on a girl. :D

    Cheers!

Bayley thanks you all for your explanations, and has turned her attention to more important matters:-

Bayley has reached that stage in life when post-prandial contemplation is sometimes called for. This allows her to evaluate the likely futility of expending hard-to-replace energy in search of more food, by checking out the other dog's dish for example, and weigh that against the minute but measurable probability that the other, more energetic dog, left before finishing. Regretably, her decision on this matter and subsequent actions have been lost to history.

Play Dough spends a lot of time in post-prandial contemplation as well. She never lets anybody in on what it is she is contemplating, perhaps cats.

Here is miss Deliliah...inherited from my son when I ousted him for sitting around on his can all day. Probably the smartest dog I have personally met...but stubborn too. Got a few bad habits that don't seem to want to be cured but all in all...pretty fat girl. I gotta work some of that off of her...and myself while I am at it.
