Goldman Sachs Maintains View That Oil Will Top Record This Year

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. repeated its forecast that crude oil prices will rebound to $149 a barrel by the end of the year as supply growth struggles to keep pace with demand from emerging markets.
Goldman maintained its forecast even after oil futures slid $30 from their July 11 record of $147.27 a barrel. Fundamentals of supply and demand are still more important in setting oil prices than investor flows linked to movements in the U.S. dollar, Goldman added.
``We expect declining trend oil supply growth and supportive emerging markets oil demand growth to continue to offset demand weakness'' in developed economies, London-based Goldman analyst Jeffrey Currie said in a report.
Prices will be supported by a combination of disappointments in production outside the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, this month's supply disruption in the Caspian Sea and the absence of any increase in consumers' oil stockpiles during the second quarter, when inventories normally rise, Goldman said.

One thing not mentioned in the global press that I read (very limited), but the consequences of the industrial shut-down in China during the Olympics may be the answer for decreased demand. A matter of wait and see what happens after a return to normal business when all the visitors go home, the status of the global economy and how full the Chineese order books are....

Thank you RHP for assuming the role of "the Big Gorilla". - - I look forward to the day when you both contribute regularly - We the regular readers could be in for e reading/information treat... Thanks

but how much is the world slowing down due to the the US slowing down and Europe must surely be going into a 15 year decline as the retirees start to kill off their governments.
The problem must be big if the Australians own the 3rd largest pension pot on the planet..yer all 20 million of them. Thats will put the governemt funded pots ( that dont exist) in Europe into perspective.

The words "The Lucky Country" come to mind, as It (any advantages Australia has) cannot be attributed to good management of thoughtful future minded politicians....

Aye m'lad, best in "self managed superannuation funds" - - within legal limits you can control what, who, when investments to make....

Paul Keating could rightfully argue that he had a huge influence on building Australia's super wealth. Compulsory contributions have made the difference.

Also I cannot complain about the more recent changes made during Peter Costello's period in office. It has become tax effective to make up to $100000pa in super contributions for those of us approaching retirement.

So, on the contrary, it was through Keating's far sighted perspective on the aging of the population that we have collectively put aside a nest egg for retirement. I can remember reading Treasury projections back in the late 80s that indicated Australians could accumulate vast reserves of capital by the first decade of this century if we committed to compulsory super at that time.

And here is some recent news:

Keating is still at it. No doubt it is something dear to him and he should take great pride in the role he played in establishing super for the masses.

In case you think Keating is my most admired poly you are dead wrong. It happens to be Joh B-P but that is a whole different story and sadly I no longer live in Queensland to enjoy the benefits of his efforts (still the cheapest petrol in Australia). I am not defending his administration but the benefits are enduring.

On a lighter note and totally off topic, my chocolate wrappers have these comments on the inside - - -
    "Money talks, but chocolate sings",
"Love is an understanding between you and your favourite flavour",
"Life - it's nothing like the brochure",
"Smile, every 7 minutes, someone doing aerobics pulls a hamstring",
"Don't go to bed angry, stay up and fight",
    "Happy ending guaranteed"......

Smile, you are on candy camera.......
