Not really. We work with some small builders in Asia and develop full set of drawings/calculations to ISO/CE/RCD as part of our design work. With that design set, boats are getting type approval certification without any problems.

Of course, if boat is built without rules in mind is not likely to comply.

Alik, you are correct with that point of view. A builder with a focus on export towards Europe will chose the required engineering services to compy with the regulations. But it put a number of smaller boatbuilders within Europe out of business and it works perfectly against owners who want to import a boat on their own. Especially when it comes to boats from the pre-CE era.

    bernd1972,

I agree with you about the protectionism aspect of the CE marking. The law of (un) intended consequences certainly applies in making importation of pre-owned boats from America very difficult and expensive. Then again the EU is not run by commercial minded people, but by unelected, faceless, socialist elites, who are grossly overpaid and who despise the general European population.

    daiquiri,

Alik wrote "uneducated fortune-seekers destroying boat building industry," but I don't think that is true, because rubbish boats do not sell. The destruction of European boatbuilding is a consequence of EU dictat, in that manufacturing is considered to be too capitalist by the EU. Hence their plans to force manuacturers overseas by vastly increasing electricity and fuel prices. Ju'liar Gillard is also doing her best to ruin Australia's economy with her policies.

When ISO was first introduced it caused a lot of confusion and expense at my company to ensure it was being met. The standards were very wordy. The procedure was to hand the whole package over to an engineer with nothing else to do at the time. Since the package covered a wide range of specialized skill sets he had to wander round and try to get busy people involved to advise him in many areas. Time consuming and inefficient. There are a lot of specialized companies around who will come in and vet procedures to ensure compliance and advise, but ultimately it's a big commitment that small companies cannot afford.

Well, if You are talking about production boats - yes, they do not sell. But look at custom boats market! There are designers who promise high-tech, 50% fuel saving, etc. etc., and there are customers who buy those unsupported claims. I meet victims of such 'designers' very often; they come to me for advise what they have to do with bare 70-90' hull of unknown shape and unsure structure, say 'can we used it as a barge, or for shell farming?'.

Look at gallery on this site - there are individuals who clam to be 'designers' and 'shipyards', but it is nothing more than picture-making rendering artist without any record.

Perry, the European Community had nothing to do with socialism. In Bruxeles we have the best politicians monry can.buy an lots of lobbyist doing just that.
Now imagine what would happen if everybody could crate his own weather, but of course everyone wants something different.
The result would be pretty close to european legislation. ;-)

OK Alik, at the risk of stepping in it, I would suggest that in Thailand, you are going to have a somewhat different view of the boatbuilding world, but only because of location, not expertise. People who commission hulls without proper research are as PT Barnum described:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There's_a_sucker_born_every_minute

Whilst I am fairly certain I know what would constitute a well designed rowing boat, I would draw a line at posing as a boat designer, although it might be fun to see how far I could spoof someone.

"BTW sir, here was my first design. Lovely clean bow, what? What's that you say, was I alive in 1914? Sir, I resent that remark. I was born in 1853 BCE, during the first Babylonian dynasty don'cha know!"

Well, if you going to lie, make it a big one. :):):)

This happens everywhere. There are well-known photos of boat launched in US :D

    Alik,

True, verily true. PT Barnum was American and suckers still abound. Some people have more money than sense, but you have to wonder how they got their money in the first instance? :):):)

You should not have started this inane thread . If you can design a boat, please stick to that.
