Boesch builds classic wood boats in europe. They have an electric one and won an award. Could never find data how long it would run. Months back saw a picture of how many batteries the small boat had but no more. It had LOTS OF THEM.

wind boat , ZEEB, tomorrows sail boat, windturbine electric boat

our boat is similar to the Bosech electric boat, but biger in size,10 times in
weight. So, our spec. is equitable and stand for trial. Our boat use are many,in private yacht aspect.

    Green boat Spec: Length 16m Width:3.8m draft:1.3m Height:4.5m(upper deck)10m (main mast), monohull

    power: 100 kW electric motor
    battery: 108KWH ,i.e. 90 pcs deep cycle batteries (100Ah 12V)=3000KGs
    wind turbine : 5kw
    Max. v :14kts (estimate)
    Range: 14nms~:!: far

    Project total material cost(estimate):US$95,000

Yet again, a range of 14 nm? You seriously think it is going to sell?

Check the Boesch electric boat, its range will give you the answer.

Advice you not to apply max. output all the time. When you drive electric car or boat. It will make the battery die young.

Re the stability of our boat:
    boat displacement (rough estimate)=15MT, GM=0.45m
transverse righting arm at inclination 30 degrees=15x0.45xsin30=3.38 ton-m
In case,a gusty wind at 25 m/s ,Beaufort scale 10. The wind drag of mast plus
    wind turbine.
    mast height(round) = 9.3m ,dia.= 0.3m
    pressure on mast=0.07534x25x25x1.2=56.5
    drag on mast=56.5x0.3x9.3=158 kgs
    drag arm=0.158x9.3/2=0.72 ton-m----------(A)
wind turbine blad area 0.2mx4m long x 3pcs=2.4 msq, turbine case =0.6 msq
pressure on wind turbine and case=0.07534x25x25x1.2=56.5 (this is the turbine stoped ,actual is less)
drag on wind turbine and case=56.5x3=170 kgs
    drag arm=0.17x9.1=1.55 ton-m ----------------(B)
    (A)+(B)=2.27 ton-m less than 3.38 ton-m,

That is our boat at gusty wind 25 m/S, the inclination will less than 30 degrees.

    E.g. 620 Acapulco de Luxe E.P.
    * 50kW electric engine
    * LiPO battery pack 252V 120Ah (equals Expensive and 30,2kWh

    Range
    a) 25min/14,5km@35km/h + 6km@10km/h, total 20,5km
    b) 45min/18,5km@25km/h + 3km@10km/h, total 21,5km
    c) 5h@10-12km/h, total 50km

    from: http://www.boesch-boats.ch/boote/serie-620/620-acapulco-de-luxe-electric-power

For this manufacturer's location these boats make sense and the lakes are not big and some, or many, have restricted or unallowed use of IC power.

If you have a 14nm range on a small launch type vessel then why not, it'll probably work. But we are talking about a motor yacht here, the sort vessel that is expected to travel distances that are measured in hundreds of nm. Do you still think someone is ready to pay $500K (more realistic price) for a yacht that can take the owner 14nm at a time and then wait for wind the next several days?

I'm just an FNG here, but this is incredible. Windboat doesn't care about your calculations or care about whether it works. He cares about getting your money!

Might I be so bold as to suggest we let this thread die?

Would not sails be cheaper and easier?

But if electric powered drive motors are the desired option, then easily driven hulls configured as in say, a catamaran... A 45 ft cat using "lifepo4" batteries which are charged by wind turbines and PV panels may give you sufficient to travel for several hours using a pair of 10kw motors to deliver 4 to 6 knots in calm seas...

Why do you not do some number crunching from a ONE-TENTH scale model, without the electrical generating stuff, but shore based charging and very accurate energy use recording systems, to work out how many KWH's in energy you will need when scaled up...

I was looking to use a pair of Torqeedo electric outboards of 4KW maximum input - Technology is not mature or robust enough for a reliable cruising lifestyle... If you have a couple of million to spare, get some expert technical help... otherwise enjoy the ride and "accept the diatribe of unbelievers", gracefully...

There are several almost total electrically powered boats about - a splash in the media then deathly silence...
